Umax 1600u USB and Windows 2000, they have no love!

i cannot get this scanner to work with windows 2000 at all, every other usb device I have runs fine 'cept this one. someone please help. under the device manager, it says that code error 31: this device cannot be enabled because windows cannot load the device driver for this deivce. WTF! i've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times. i've also tried vistascan 3.55 with the 3.55 update patch, and still no go. someone please help! tia.
