So I missed my connecting flight from LAX because my flight from O'Hare was two hours late. My new flight departs in just over eight hours. The best part is, United says they can't do ANYTHING (no hotel, no meal vouchers, nothing) because it is a weather related delay.

It is frigging midnight here and I CAN'T afford a hotel. This will be a real fun night.

I am SERIOUSLY pissed at this point. I don't have $70 to spend on a hotel room for the night. Sadly, my dad is a 1k member and I WOULD call him, but he is asleep by now. I have the crazy feeling he will be going ballistic on United tomorrow morning (travels at least once per week, this trip was a gift from him, booked using his award miles).

lol, i spent some time travelling europe in ways that made an airport look like a luxery.

but i tend to travel extremely cheap :p

edit: but yeah, your situation sucks... but I can also see the airlines point of view. I mean, imagine if there was a storm that cancelled flights for several days, a few times a year. That would be 10's of thousands of people's accomidations they'd be paying for because of something completely out of their control.

I understand it to an extent, but it is still their fault. They actually gave hotels to everyone that was flying international, but the rest of us pretty much got told to screw off.

1.Find a big white board
2. Find a black magic marker.
3. Write "UNITED SUCKS" on the board
4. Walk around the airport holding up the sign.

This might make you feel better, but you still won't get a hotel room gratis from them.

even if you had the cash, it doesn't seem worth it for 8 hours... hang out in the airport, sleep on the plane.

Just hang around the United Counter and tell people how bad your experience has been with them, maybe they'll do something, like give you meal coupons or further delaying your departure ;)

When I was delayed overnight (United Airlines at O'Hare airport) because of bad weather and a missed connection, I went to a nearby hotel. At the hotel, the clerk asked if the airline had given me a "distressed traveler" voucher. Of course, UA completely failed to offer anything like that. The clerk gave me the discount anyway. I think she could tell that I was exhausted and pissed off.

UA sucks major donkey balls.

I almost got stuck at Chicago Midway for the same reason... weather related delay, missed the last flight of the night. Best they could do is send me to Atlanta where I'd have 10 minutes to make the last flight of the night again - IF my flight from Midway to Atlanta was on time. I got lucky and got a flight on another airline though, and AirTran refunded the unused portion of my ticket. Worked out to be about the same price.

Really, they can't do anything about the weather. It's not their fault. It's frustrating, but it's still not their fault. I hope you at least got a food voucher out of them.

Oh yeah - the flight from Midway to Atlanta was delayed. If I didn't switch airlines, I'd have been stuck in one airport or the other.

It's only 8 hours, it doesn't seem like you really need a hotel. But you'd think food vouchers would be must though.

It's not really their fault so i'm not sure why you're bitching so much as if it was United that made the bad weather come

This link might help pass the time or give good advice about how or where to sleep. Look up the airport that you are in and see recommendations for the best sleeping spots.

My family and I always fly United:) I'm a premier (didn't fly much this year), sister is premier exec, dad is 1k and mom is 1k/million mile.

If your dad was the one flying they would have given out a hotel room, they'll usually spring for 1k and most times premier executives. Come on, what do you expect? You aren't a frequent flier, you are using free reward miles, they can't control the weather (though SFO and ORD are probably the worst choices for hubs, and Denver isn't doing too well this winter). Just get used to it, I think I've been stuck in Chicago 3 or 4 times and other airports a number of times. Grab some pillows and blankets from arriving flights and get some sleep.

My sister once ended up sleeping at JFK (on her way to Paris) because she was under 18 so they couldn't comp her a room. Tell me if that makes any sense.

Also, many airlines lie about the reason the flight was delayed/cancelled...

A friend of mine had a layover in Detroit and the airline said that the connecting flight was delayed because it didn't arrive from the previous destination because of weather (no compensation). Well, the stupid airline rep did not know that it is very easy to trace flights (right on their website). Turns out that the plane had been diverted to a more busy/profitable route and was standing at a different gate at the very moment..

I think he complained about this to the airline. Not too sure what happened next...

I can't believe they didn't give you a food voucher. That's ******. I wouldn't expect a hotel voucher from them for an 8 hour delay though...
