Um, the little square brass heatsink on the motherboard fell off..

So I got all of my parts the other day from Newegg, and as I'm taking out the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 2) I seriouslly BARELY touched that heatsink -- i believe on the "chipset" -- and one of the spring-loaded corner screws just popped right up. Obviously it wasn't secured very well through the circuit board, but now I'm not sure if I should RMA the thing (if they let me), or if I should just take the whole thing off, scrape the gunk clean, apply some AS5, and refasten it. Shouldn't be too hard to do, and I have to do this kind of stuff with the cpu anyways, but I'm still a littler uncertain about it. The exposed area of the chip is pretty small, so I'd prolly just put a little dab of arctic silver in the middle and then re-clip the heatsink. Am I overly worried about this or what?

Probably overly worried yes, you're probably talking about the NB heatsink, no? You wouldn't be the first guy taking it off, applying as5 and reseating it. RMA-ing shouldnt't be a problem, but shouldn't be a problem either if you try reseating it but it doesn't work.

Will be AS5'ing the sucker!

I never know how much of that goop to use, though, as I used it once on a 6800 with mixed results. Don't want to use too much, don't want to use too litte.

Sucker that AS5 !!!

Oh oops, think I got carried away a little. I suggest using a drop the size of half a rice grain. Less is more.

Thanks for the advice on the AS5. One half of a grain of rice it is.

Wait... is that long grain, sushi, wild, or brown rice? All I have is Uncle Ben's! Guess that'll have to suffice.

this was actually one of the funnier posts in this forum for a while 🙂

Last night I finally built my first computer. As a total and complete noob builder, I went slowly and deliberately. I reseated the NB heatsink thanks to the advice I got in this thread, plugged the incredible mess of wires in to the motherboard and tied them back, closed her up, said a quick prayer, and flipped the switch. Omg it works! Guess it really wasn't so hard after all, heh. And I was always kind of scared to do this. At any rate, after playing with her for 4 or 5 hours last night, I even slightly tweaked the FSB in BIOS and successfully got a little OC going. I am shocked that I encountered zero problems in my first build (/knocking on wood (skull))

Couldn't have done this without the guides and member advice in this forum. Seriously, I don't think people say thank you enough on this board. So: Thanks all.

My new homemade computing machine:

-Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 9 rev 2.0
-E6420 - currently at 2.4ghz 🙂
-2gb Corsair 800mhz ram
-80gb 7,200rpm WD hd (oem)
-8800 GTS 320mb
-TT 550w
-Cooler Master Centurion case

Think that's about it. It's BF2 time on my 37" lcd tv, baby.

Great job! 🙂

If you don't mind me asking, how much did that setup run you? My PC needs an overhaul and I am trying to price things out.

Thank you, sirs. I'm going to be a cave dweller this weekend and horse around with the new machine. Can't wait to get off work!

Throw in a $17 OEM dvd-rom drive, Arctic Silver 5, some ties and a couple SATA cables and it came to $840.00. All from Newegg. I'm sure if I had froogled everything and pieced it together from multiple sources I could have saved 50 to 75 bucks, but I trust Newegg's RMA policy and shipping so I got it all in one shot. Also, I already had a copy of Windows XP, keyboard/mouse, and monitor.
