Um...is this a common problem in vehicles today?

I rented a Ford Focus last weekend while on a trip, and as I took my luggage out of the trunk, I saw this thing.

I mean, I'm all for safety and all, but still...does it happen THAT often that it's a standard feature now?

It's not like you get in crashes all the time, but you still have crumple zones and airbags. My WRX has one of those in the trunck, and I think it's a good feature. I would hate to be stuck in a cars trunk.

Just about. See, this is why small time mafioso like those old lincoln town cars and caddilacs. Their kidnapping/hit victims have a harder time escaping.

I often lock myself in the trunk while I'm reaching deep in there to grab that last grocery bag

I beleive there was a law passed a couple years ago so kids wouldn't get locked in the trunk and suffocate. Some of the researchers said that a big problem was kids didn't want to grab the glow in the dark handle because they equated it with being hot

Reminds me of something in the aircraft emergency booklet....

In every new Ford, I've seen it...

I'm a bit more concerned that the domain to which your link is pointing is "flingpoo.net"...

In older cars you could just kick the back of the rear seat out to escape. Some cars even had the back of the rear seat hinged at the top so that you could swing it up and insert long objects through the trunk and into the passenger compartment. When I was a kid half a dozen of us would go to the drive-in theater. Two would sit in front while the rest hid in the trunk. When we were inside the ones in the trunk could just push the seatback forward and crawl into the passenger compartment.

Ok, now who's going to be the first wiseass to say, "What's a drive-in theater"?

LOL, plus you could get a whole towns hits in one round without stopping at the next lake with a Lincoln Continental. In all these new cars you are contantly having to stop ;)
