i'm getting a Blu-Ray drive in a couple of days for testing. It's a Panasonic SW5582 model. My problem is this.. How the hell am i going to be able to test it? Are there Blu-Ray movies out yet? Are there video cards that support true HDCP yet? how the hell do they expect me to test this product if nothing is out there to test it with?

The Panasonic rep told me that to play back movies on a PC.. you're gonna need a 3ghz dual core processor. Um.. WHAT?? how many people on the market actually have a 3ghz dual core system? so... any help or information or insights you can provide will be immensely appreciated.

Can you get any BR media? You can burn some 25GB BR media.

Maybe this is a silly question, but did you ask if they had a sample disc with trailers and other scenes in high-def?

Remember back in 1997 when DVD-ROM drives came with a separate decoder card for movie playback? Decoding VC-1 and MPEG4 clips in realtime requires a lot CPU power. I wouldn't be surprised if you started seeing separate decoder cards with some Blu-ray or HD DVD drives.

He should be sending you samples too. Otherwise, I think most people who would be buying a blue ray drive have hte money for a 3hz dual core processor. Like my Opteron 165. If thats not powerful enough, then you got a case.

You don't need a dual core 3GHz PC. HD-DVD/BluRay content is very similar to the HD content put out tonight, albeit with slightly higher bitrates. I play back 11GB HD movies on my Venice 3000+ with no problem. Though, my GPU does offset a lot of the work.

well yea but the dvd decoder cards seemed mostly for tv out use. back then our monitors were rather small u know. dvd wasn't that hard to decode, decent machines then coulddo it. i had a dxr2 and quickly dumped it. its output was err..ugly to say the least.

A Blu-Ray standalone will basically be a computer just like Toshiba's HD-A1 HD DVD unit. Over at avsforum someone has already opened up one and it had an Intel P4 processor, Northbridge, etc. They even made a 6 minute video of the operation. They yanked the drive out and installed it in a computer without having to do any fancy cable mods since it was EIDE cabled. Worked in the computer without a problem. So I'm thinking I'll just get a friend in the biz (Sony retailer) to order me a replacement Blu-Ray drive after they have been out for a while for a cheap price hopefully. Slap that puppy in my HTPC. I just can't afford these insane prices for DVD players- $499 for HD-DVD and $999 for Blu-Ray.
