Um...Do I need a new receiver?

Here's the deal: I just bought a Samsung LN52A630, Panasonic BD player, MIrage nanosat system with the omnisat V2 CC, and now I'm wondering if my 15yr old 5 channel is up to the task.

The issue surrounds the subwoofer and the lack of a subwoofer out on my sony relic.

The sub does have line-level inputs, but the wire setup Mirage suggests seems odd. They have you running a second set of speaker wires from your main front channels to the sub.

1. It has been a while since I have dabbled in the receiver world, but doesn't that mess with the sound or at least resistance) of the main speakers? In my case, the setup sounds OK, but I don't know the "B" of the A/B test (the line level). Or, maybe the powered sub draws so little it doesn't change the ohmage?

2. To further add to the confusion, the line level out on most receivers is fixed right? How would I adjust that? And if my BD player goes directly to the TV, then would I run audio to the receiver via optical or other outputs (is optical or RCA better)?

3. I am not averse to buying a new receiver, but I need some guidance here - will my sound in movies be that much better by having my audio go from the BD player via HDMI cables vs. optical or other outputs?

Thanks

Assuming you're packing a BD-30 or better AND you have a good speaker setup, you should get some serious improvement on titles which support DD+, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA, or DD-TrueHD. If you're still into doing it Sony-style, the STR-DG820 or better will do just fine. Otherwise, look at the Onkyo 605 or 606.

I would upgrade the receiver for the various improvements you will get on the surround formats. Otherwise, you are kind of defeating the enhanced HD surround formats available on the BR player. You will hear a major improvement in the surround channels and subwoofer by upgrading.

Love my Onkyo.

I just think I like it because it is my first receiver with digital inputs.

My secret shame --- I was just about to buy the Onkyo, got called away from the computer and changed my mind...I went the with Pioneer VSX-1018AH for a few dollars more...($430) no real reason, but the Pioneer had slightly better appeal for me...

The Pioneer 1018 has an excellent reputation - can't go wrong with that.
