Hey all..

Looking for suggestions and/or websites that have benchmarks and suggestsions about scsi drives.

I've had a ultra scsi 9gig cheeta drive for a few years, and I'm not really not impressed with the speed vs price. Infact, my year old 60 gig maxtor 5400rpm drive outperforms my 10,000rpm ultra scsi drive, go figure.

Is ultra160 scsi really that much better than ultra ata 100 drives in overall performance?

Thanks for any comments.

Which version of the Cheetah do you have? Is it an old one like the 4LP, or the 9LP, which, was one of the earliest 10k rpm drives? The newest 10k rpm drives perform much better than the first generation 10k rpm drives. My 9gb IBM 36LZX(I think it's a 4th generation 10k drive) 10krpm U160 drive totally destroyed my 5400rpm ATA66 and ATA33 drives in performance.:)

As Ultra SCSI has a maximum throughput of 20MB/sec it isn't strange at all, maybe if you had a U3W (U160) drive and controller you could compare them, but then the SCSI drive would trash the IDE drive...

Even your old USCSI drive will trash any 7200RPM brand new drive when it comes to seek times though, and that is what is most important, unless you spend your days copying large files...

Ok thanks.. Any suggestions on high performance but still affordable drives ~16 gig or so? I was looking at Seagates 15k rpm drive ST318451LW, seems to be a pretty nice one, and 3.9ms seek time.

Hypermicro currently has some really good deals on fast 10k drives. IBM 36ZXL, Quantum Atlas 10k II, etc.. available in 9GB, 18GB, and 36GB.

Mention storagereview.com when ordering to receive free shipping

$179 for a 9.2 gig Atlas 10K II at the hypermicro link is a pretty good deal.... If I wasn't so interested in the new 15K Seagate, I would pick up one of those at that price...

I just picked up an 18GB IBM 36LZX for $225 .. free shipping with deals from either overclockers.com or storagereview. Plenty of room to run both W2K & WinME, all your apps .. and even a distro or two of Linux. Save your ATA100 drives for el cheapo mass storage (MP3s, jpegs, etc.)
