I saw Johnny Guru said some of the new ultra supplies like the x-pro were incredible, but I haven't heard much about these xvs modular supplies. Anyone know if they are any good? I ordered one for $30 which is about what I paid for my 500 watt earthwatts.
Just not sure if it is worth it to replace my earthwatts if this thing is worse.
If anyone has any experience with these supplies please share. I'm especially concerned about the sound since I use my pc as an htpc/game machine.

I'll have to keep it short and simple to remove question of bias, spreading FUD, etc. but....

  • XVS stands for "X-Connect Value Series"
  • They tend to be rated at "peak" and not "continuous"
  • They are rated at 25°C and not at 40°C+
  • They do not have any power factor correction
  • Even Ultra doesn't try to fudge the efficiency numbers. :(

I'll let you derive your own conclusion from that information.

Sounds about like a 750Watt unit would only be a 400-450 Watt unit at normal operating temperature to me.

So which are the "good Ultras" and which are the "bad Ultras"?

based on that review these models look like the good ones:
Unlike the X3?s and X-Pro 600w EE which were built by Andyson and the X-Pro 750w which was built by Seventeam

The rest seem kinda iffy I guess.
