Ok, I purchased a Ultra XConnect 500W Power Supply becuase my Antec 350 was dying on me and it work fine for a day then it smelled like something was burning and my friend said the capacitors inside were burning and it was going to die. I went and exchanged it for another one and after a day the same thing happened. Does anyone know if this is common on these power supplies or did I get another defective one. I can look inside while its running and there is a little glowing capacitor looking like its burning so any suggestions would be nice. Thanks in advance.

. I love this quote, so I'll repeat it here: "There once were only two classes of PSU: quality and crap. Now there are three: quality, crap and crap that glows."

. You can get a kit from svc.com et al. to make any PSU modular. So pick a known good brand and mod it. If you aren't handy with tools, there are at least 5 other brands that have modular now. Almost any one of them would be better than any Ultra product.

Zepper's post sums them up pretty well. (crap that glows :) )

If you really want a modular psu:

They (Ultra-X) are not as nice as the unit you replaced. I would get a refund and a good FSP or one of the better Enermax. There are many PSU's that are far far better than the Ultra-X PSU, and are in the same/lower price range.

This list on Xtreme Systems is not all-inclusive, but does list some that have been tested by reputable testers and by reputable means. You'll notice that Antecs don't show much on there, and Ultra-X are not reccomended at all.

Good source for tested PSU's and prices

There are a few other threads there at the moment comparing OCZ to PC Power and Cooling units, and they are not looking so good either.

Despite everyone on Anand Tech loving Ultra-X, Antec, and OCZ, they are not the ones that are rated well. It seems that they are popular though (but so was Michael Jackson back in the day).

I have found tons of articles on the web that have good things to say about this power supply.

http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/psus/index.x?pg=1

I think this was the best review I found since it shows how the PSU performs against other PSUs, but is rarely mentioned (good or badly) in the article.

Also, I don't know if you should really trust trustedreviews.com since it's a european site and their outlets put out a higher voltage than ours.

<flameshield=on>Yeah, but don't put too much faith in reviews. Most of them are just pure BS. If they give too many bad ratings, they wouldn't get any more products from the manufacturers.</flameshield>

So if reviews are just BS, then what is the point of reading them? Also how are you supposed to know how good ANY product is from it's review. I would have to say that reviews still hold some value.

I also think that with this product, the units produced are in fact of lower quality. This doesn't mean it's a bad product, it just points at the fact that maybe the manufacturing process isn't as good as it should be and this creates an inconsistency in the product. There are those out there who rave about these power supplies (not even in reviews, on forums and such) and those who hate them either based on reputation or because they have had a bad experience with the product. Of course this applies to almost every component out there, but with this one opinions really seem to vary.

I think if you are willing to put all your other components on the line then go ahead and buy it. If not...well then don't.

Just out of curiousity, how many of you criticizing the ultra x-connects actually have first-hand experience with them?
