More details on making your own modular psu please.

And doing that wouldn't you lose the ability to add more stuff?

Why would you lose the ability to add more stuff? The only point of resistance is the male molex at the PSU...

Then you just make molex cables from scrath... with as many connectors as you want...

You'll need
Molex pins (Me->gold plated)
Molex connectors (Me->UV Blue EZ-grip)
Wire (Me->16 gauge hookup wire)
Sleeving (Me->UV Blue)
Heatshrink (Me->UV Blue)

Dont get the X-Connect. The Neopower is better than it and the Modstreams are better than that.

I agree with Amorque, please search before you post.

Ya that's called putting the expense on the outside instead of inside... I've seen this POWMAX with connects as low as $60...JUNK.

You can get a kit from SVC.com et al. to convert any PSU to modular.

And as others pointed out, there are multiple threads in this section and in Cases & Cooling on this topic. 'Search' is your friend...

That's what I'm thinking. (But he's new and don't wanna be hard on him). Seems like between here and Cases & Cooling this POS (IMHO) PSU comes up in a new post very 3 or 4 days.

Welcome to the Forums Mattburk!

You have surely profited today. The search function is your friend, the Xconnect is not.

I should have been more specific. That wasn't directed solely at the OP. I just get tired of seeing a new thread on this POS PSU every other day. Hopefully he's read this thread, and didn't buy that poor excuse for a PSU.

Oh yeah, welcome to the Forums Mattburk! :)

The Antec: Insanely high 5V rail and nothing on the 12V's. What do you need all that juice on the 5V for? I think Antec did that just so they could market a 480W. Antec needs to improve the 12V before I give that one the time of day. Also the cables are fugly.

OCZ Modstream: HORRIBLY INSTABLE RAILS. I hooked a couple up to a SunMoon SM-268 power supply tester and the power factor and wattage on the AC side fluctuated wildly at only half load. I had more faith in Topower products. I think that opinion may change. Maybe Topower sold OCZ all of their rejects and kept the good stuff for Tagan and Raid Max.

Ultra is what I like. But if you're like TrustedReviews and leave the 5V set high on your tester because all of the other power supplies you test have high 5V and no 12V capability, you'll blow one up. You need to know the difference between a PSU with a lot of 5V and a lot of 12V. Fortunately, you'll probably never push more than 16A on the 5V rail so most any PSU on the market will do with the specs that are out there. What's nice about the Ultra is that it has a really high 12V for peripherals like Prescotts and SLI. Also, I think they have the slickest cables.

Of course, I have to throw in the disclaimer: If you don't need modular cables DO NOT BOTHER. You're paying a premium for that. Take that same amount of money and look at a non-modular power supply and you'll find some nice specs. Hell... You could spend HALF as much and get the SAME specs.

My main rig has the Ultra X-Finity 600W. http://www.3dgameman.com/vr/ultra_products/600w_psu/video_review.html What makes that power supply unique it that it's actually TWO Wintech 300W power supplies on top of each other. NO LIE. So, given the fact that you REALLY only need a 300W power supply for your system, the fact that the X-Finity 600W is actually two quality 300W PSU's in one housing makes it that much sweeter and they're really cheap now because there's supposedly a new model coming out. Sure it doesn't have modular cables, but come on. If the cables bother you, route them underneath the motherboard and along the backside of the drive bays. Blue fans and a window in the side of the PSU is enough to keep me happy. ;)
