Ok, here it is. I did it the other day, and Im passing it on... (I did the deal at a B&M store). I called first to check stock only, and ask "do you pricematch internet stores?" the guy said, yes, "only the name brand stores like walmart, costco, etc)..

Costco has the 17" envision 7100e lcd monitor for $479.99

Specs
Flat Panel 17" TFT LCD (VIS 17")
16.7 million display colors
Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz (recommended)
Refresh Rate: 75Hz.
Pixel pitch: 0.264 mm x 0.264 mm
Contrast Ratio: 300:1
Warranty: 3 years

http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=product%2Easp&catid=84&subid=1680&hierid=1683&prdid=10018123

Have staples pricematch costco to get the price down to $479.99.

Then whip out the $30 (printable coupon). You know where to get it.. for in store use.. There is a $40 for online use, but dont think this deal will work online due to the new staples.com pricematch policy.

This brings the total to $449.99.

Then staples has a $50 mail in rebate to make the total $399.99. (purchase between dec 16 - dec 24)
summary:

$479.99 - pricematch costco at staples B&M
-$30.00 - printable staples B&M coupon
-$50.00 - mail in rebate
-----------
$399.99

for a 17" lcd this is a DEAL.

monitor gets good reviews too:

thought you couldnt combine a price match and a coupon any more. Didnt Staples change their policy recently? Maybe It will work at a B&M.

Some Staples wont price match discount warehouses either (Sams, Costco, BJs)

Staples did a pricematch for me with dell and I was able to use a $40 off 200 coupon to get the Viewsonic 15" LCD for $168 after rebate back in October. The CSR's name was Laura in Kentucky I think. I just play "blonde" and place the order, then spit out the coupon. They know you will cancel it if they don't let you use it and they have already entered the order in the computer so they usually let it go. I never had a problem so far.

I would give it a shot. But they may charge you the $14.20 shipping that costco is charging.
Nice deal if it works.

beausam2, I tried that deal 4 times and got shot down each time when I tried to use the coupon. So its not easy, you got lucky. People will have a better chance for this deal at their b&m stores.

Also, you should let other people know that the deal you are talking about is dead.

You are right! using acoupon with a PM is a deal deal at Staples.com. In addition, this monitor has a Staples specific $50 MIR so they will use that in the PM. Since Staples price is lower after their MIr, they will not PM online. Your best bet is at the B&M. As with all Stpales deals YMMV. IMO this monitor is not worth $400. You can get a Planar 17.4" from Dell when they have their %off deals for about the same price and no sales tax for most. The Planar has a 450:1 contrast ratio compared to the 300:1 of the EN-7100e.

How anyone can run quake 3 or any action game for that matter on an lcd is beyond me. Have you actually tried it? The latency of the lcd makes it unplayable, imho. Why people don't bitch more about this aspect of lcd's is beyond me!

it seemed to do a decent job for me. granted, it was for a short time.. but he plays it too. for the hardcore gamer, it probably wouldn't be enough. the SGI's are suppose to be great w/ fps/action type games.. and the planar from dell (there's a big thread on this over at ars).

It probably depends on the LCD monitors pixel response time. I have played several games on a Microtek 15" LCD and they all play fine. Although I haven't tried Quake, I have played Castle Woflenstein and Nascar 4. They didn't look any different or worse than on my CRT... although the maxiumum fps is limited to around at least 60, but thats plenty fast enough. One drawback LCD's have is you pretty much have to use the fixed resolution for everything.

here's an excerpt from a user review on cNet.

However I do play some FPS type games and flight sims and Unreal Tournament worked VERY smoothly and without any artifacts. There were a few lines on the screen after you were killed, which don't count, but during the game I was getting over 120fps in 1280X1024 native 16bit colors and it was beautiful.

That's awesome that you find it acceptable and a good value, but I think you're a little misguided. Even if your graphics card is capable of 120fps, it's limited by the highest frequency your LCD can produce, in this case 60 cycles at it's native resolution. You're therefore only really running 60fps.

The other issue I'm trying to get at is the pixel response time. Even monitors capable of delivering <25ms response time can deliver some ghosting and atifacts. Monitors above that are typically bad at delivering a good quaility, fast moving game experience. When fast moving objects go across the screen you'll see some ghosting, an artifact where the object stood milliseconds prior. This is what I'm desperate to avoid and what made me ebay my first tft about a year ago.

I'm waiting for a 20" tft with a pxel response time <=15ms before I jump back in.
