I'm leaning towards the Casio Z77 as it's one of the few compacts with image stabilization in the price range of under $175.

The Z77 is also on Steve-Digicams best cameras page as it got a very favorable review.

Are there other cameras I'm missing in the ultra compact category?

What is your budget? If he wants more reach than the 3x on the Casio, you might want to look at Panasonic's DMC-TZ2 (if you can find it) or DMC-TZ3: 10x optical zoom in a package not much bigger than the Casio. I found a good deal on a TZ-3 (7.2MP) at $230, and bought it for my mom and dad; otherwise, it looks like the price starts at about $240 from a reputable online retailer.

the Z77 doesn't really have image stabilization. it has a DSP that tries to correct the blur after the fact. steve seems to think that mostly it just bumps up the sensitivity, leaving you with a water color instead of a photograph.

the TZ3 is almost 3x the size of the SD1000.
