Nice card, got one a year or more ago at $30-odd. Too bad most drives never really get up to 66, though.

I think they did change some stuff that might make modding a little harder with the newer versions. Knowing compgeeks though its probably an old system pull. We'll have to see.... I'll post the link to the new modding thing if i ever find it.

Answering some questions: no, the Quantum from buy.com doesn't come with this card. I bought that Quantum, and I also bought this card (though I got mine from Onvia for $20 shipped, with the cable.)

Almost all of the new 7200 RPM drives are ATA/66, so you will definitely get use from a card like this. I noticed the performance increase when I upgraded to this card.

Note that the card is backward compatible, and will run ATA/33 drives just fine.

I couldn't pass up this price. I have been running a Maxtor Plus40 7,200 on the BX6r2 EIDE channel, albeit at UDMA/33. I wonder if I will be able to tell the difference...

Well it really depends what you use it for... I did setup a RAID array with some cards from 3ware. Really nice stuff but right now it seems like all the chips are ATA33 (so each drive gets one ATA33 channel to itself on the card, no master/slave used, just one drive per ATA33 channel) and I was hitting max. I got better speeds with the Ultra66 (non-RAID) but we really need the mirroring so...

Just FYI, the best buy I found on this may be the one at onvia; depends on whether you need a cable and/or want a "new" card.

Link to item at Onvia

$20.58 for new retail (including cable) with (free) shipping.

vs 23.75 for same from compugeeks (including 4.50 for the cable.)

It appears as your calculatations are wrong. If you add the card from onvia to your cart it also adds the cable, which is approx 5.50$. So re-figure your comparison. They are both good deals. :)

jblondi: I think you may have already had something in your cart. I bought this very controller from Onvia for $20.50, delivered. It comes with the cable (in the box, it's not a throw-in or anything). I just tried the link now, and I get hte controller card with cable for
$20.58.

The last two Maxtor retail boxed drives (Staples with hefty $40 off coupon!) came with UDMA/66 cables, so I don't need cables. This is one more thing in favor of decent retail kits of hard drives.
