Ultra-120 Extreme Question.

I'm debating getting the 120 Extreme, but I want to know does it support dual fans? 1 Intake and 1 Exaust (one on each side?).

I'm also wondering if I should should pick up a NB fan as well? According to ASUS Probe + Speadfan, it's temp is 34c now and has been up to 41c.

yes, but it doesn't have a second fan clip. three rubber bands work fine instead. it's a great HSF.

if you want a NB fan, get a thermalright HR-05 SLI (the HR-05 won't fit with a Ultra 120 but the SLI version will) but it depends on the board and VGA card. it probably fits on your P5W but if you have a 8800, it might not. you will want to check out the measurements. and get a 80mm fan for that HR-05.

Another thing to watch for is the case ceiling. The 120/Extreme is TALL!! You generally can't have any side case fan directly over it, else the panel won't close. I had to return the Thermaltake Armor chassis with 250mm side fan because of that. Even the Cooler Master 832 won't close unless I remove the 120mm fan in its quadrant. Happy owner despite of that. 🙂

The HR-05 will fit fine on an LGA775 board at least. The Ultra 120 Extreme can be turned horizontal instead of vertical.

Yep, thats how I mounted it with the HR-05 and that way the 120mm fan on the Ultra also pulls air through the HR-05

I have ordered exactly those two sinks for the CPU and chipset.
So, the only way to fit them is to install the CPU sink rotated by 90 degrees? I was hoping to install it so that it would blow towards the rear case exhaust fan!

Is there no way to install it that way and still be able to install HR-05 also?

Nope not on any boards I've seen, the Ultra is too wide and overhangs the NB.

I see.
May be I can install the CPU sink rotated but install the fan still facing the back!
Even if the fan faces up, it will blow air towards the intake of the PSU, which should still be good.

has anyone been able to find a picture guide for installing the ultra 120 extreme on an asus striker extreme in an antec 900 case? been checking google and the manufacturer's site and all I can find is the generic guide that looks different from the strikers setup.

Many have reported problems with this cooler.
I have also: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=37&threadid=2046722&enterthread=y

You may have to lap it. Lapping is not an easy thing to do. It requires a lot of patience to do it right. It will void the warranty also.

I have mine on a Gigabyte DS3 board. I also have a Thermalright cooler for the chipset. I had to install the CPU cooler rotated by 90 degrees. For that to work, I had to move the case exhaust fan to outside the case!
On advantage of rotating the CPU cooler is that the fan also cools the chipset sink now.

Edit:
Case is Super Lanboy

The user reviews at Newegg are also very mixed. I would not expect this from a $65 HS.

Perhaps the Tuniq Tower is still the king once you factor in quality.

As much as it pains me to say this, you might want to hold off on that purchase until the quality control issues are straightened out at Thermalright.

I'd hold off. When I got mine, the bottom was rough and I thought that was what was holding mine back. I have lapped the sucker twice, reseated it over a dozen times (vertically and horizontally), used 3 types of thermal paste, and used many different fans on it (both 1 and 2 at a time) and my temps are still nowhere near where they should be.

I really think now the heatpipes are just not properly connected to the HS itself. Poor quality, all the way around.

You're kidding about voiding a warranty on a HS, right? I lapped by Ultra-120 X and got a small gain in temps (about °2 C). It wasn't that difficult. I also lapped my IHS on my CPU and have seen a reduction of about 7 °C on my coolest core and over 10 °C on my hottest core. Lapping is the single best bang-for-your-buck thing you can do for heat reduction.

Wrong!
This is a cooler that many are reporting problems with. A buyer may want to return it to Thermalright. I don't see why they should take it back if it is lapped.

Only problem I see is a bad heatpipe. Other stuff like a bad mount or whatever TR would just send out a replacement. I guess I don't see it as an item that has a high likelihood of being bad in the first year or whatever short time period is covered. Just my opinion 🙂
