Ultimate Point Defense Weapon

so after that 1 minute, is it overheated and you have to abandon it? or do you just reload another 1 million rounds?

Meh. This is pretty old news, and a homemade grenade would work about as well. I can appreciate the engineering that went into it, but it's in no way practical.

would be an interesting try as an anti-missile countermeasure which is why I assumed it mentions the navy buying some.

This is from like over 10 years ago, very very old news lol. I remember seeing something about this on tv in my early 20s. Im in my mid 30s.

I prefer the X-15 Cruise Basselope... but it's more of a first strike weapon than a point defense weapon.

Maybe it would work for rpgs, but you need a bigger bullet for anti-ship missiles. I believe the ciws that basically all our ships use is 20mm. In any case, that company went bankrupt and its IP has already been bought by another one.

The navy bought some to play with, but nothing ever happened. They have the CIWS Phalanx gun as a last-ditch, short range missile interception system and it's moderately effective. Last I heard they decided to upgrade and modernize that platform rather than switching to anything else. The Metalstorm is undeniably cool, but not the least bit practical in the real world.

They're in the process now of loading on short range missile boxes to either take over a substantial augment the CIWS duty.

private: sarge, what's the plan?
Sargeant: we are going to all stand shoulder to shoulder in this open field and attack head on
private: but they have a Metalstorm??!!
Sargeant: keep moving forward!

Shit I read a sci-if novel 10 years ago with this in it. In 2020 a naval task force gets sent back to WWII a la the Final Count Down. The ships were armed with metal storm for point defense.
