is it necessary? what exactly does it swap? is 512mb always enough for a swap partition or is more space sometimes needed?

It's sort of the equivalent of the Windows pagefile. How much you need depends on your workload. If you wish to use hibernation you should have at least 1xmemory the amount of swap, usually a bit more since you might have data in swap when you go to hibernate.
