Ultimate Gaming Build... Any advice?

The last build I built was over 7 years ago and it lasted me a very long time, until it finally broke down a few months ago. This time, I'm hoping to build a a stronger gaming computer that can last me another 7 years. Of course, I wouldn't mind upgrading a part every 1~2 years but for the most part, I'd like to build it and enjoy it without tinkering too much. I mostly use my computer for gaming, streaming videos, and computer programming but never more than two of those things at the same time.

Any thoughts, advice, criticism, suggestions are appreciated!

I agree with this. See [thread=2389797]this thread[/thread] for basic mobo/RAM options. You can get a better mobo, but be sure you need/want extra features it provides. SLI support would be such a feature; so would overclocking well.

If you're willing to upgrade in a year or two I'd stick with the 970 and upgrade to one of the 16nm GPUs that are supposed to come out in a year or so.

If you answer [thread=80121]these questions[/thread], we can provide more detailed answers.

Ultimate? Well, that calls for overclocked 5930K with 980 Ti SLI on a 1440p IPS GSync monitor.

Oh well, back to real life and boring budget constraints. Speaking of - what is your budget?

Second - what monitor will you buy gaming on? Do you already own a monitor? What about other peripherals?

Third - where are you buying from?

Fourth - do you want to overclock?

Haha, sorry I should've titled it "$1500 Ultimate Gaming Computer". I'm using my old HD Samsung monitor for now but I'm definitely planning on upgrading that some time next year.

I was planning on purchasing the parts on NewEgg or Ebay. And i definitely plan on overclocking.

Sorry, it's my first time on this forum.

1. I mostly use my computer for gaming, streaming videos, and computer programming but never more than two of those things at the same time.

2. My budget is more or less $1,500.

3. I was planning on buying the parts from Newegg or Ebay from the USA.

5. My preferred brands are Seasonic for PSU. Intel for CPU, and Samsung SSD for storage.

7. I definitely plan on overclocking.

8. I'm reusing my old Samsung HD monitor but definitely plan on upgrading next year.

9. Will have this build built by the end of next month.

10. I'm planning on getting Windows 10 installed on this build.

On a side note, would it be worth it to splurge on Skylake? The price difference is pretty big...

advice: stop trying to build ULTIMATE builds. it just doesn't pay, and bedsides, "ultimate" is a 2005 concept. when we still believed the BS of "future-proof"

instead, buy the build that makes sense *now*, and keep doing it when something new comes out.

aside from that, i would avoid the captain, instead get a simple 212EVO. or even run stock .. i run stock on my friend's 4790k and it hums at 4.4Ghz boost.
for mobo, i'd take a simple gigabyte D3 series; i'd also take the EVGA psu because it's cheaper, and would prefer a define R4 (or R5) instead of the 440, but the 440 is still a great case.

don't know how much the ram will cost ya, but that 49790k i built has 16GB @1600 and it works fine. cheap stuff, functional. good choice of GPU.

Yes to Skylake. $1500 enough to build a kickass Skylake set. There's no particular reason to buy Haswell other than to save money which cannot be your objective with a $1500 budget.

Re: the parts you listed in OP

CPU - 6700K
CPU Cooler - AIO water cooling tends to be ultra noisy and expensive compared to air, you can get very good OC results with a $50 air cooler
Motherboard - A ~$150 Z170 board is sufficient for any OC you can do on air/AIO
Memory - 2666MHz would be my minimum, although you can probably OC a 2400Mhz kit to 2666 without touching voltages - let's see what we can find
Storage - no need to pay extra for a Pro drive, the standard 850 EVO is excellent and more than suitable for home PC & gaming needs
Video card - MSI Gaming 970 is a nice card
PSU - X-series is not bad at all. Depends on the price really. I would probably go with EVGA G2, built by Super Flower (based on the Leadex Gold platform), or maybe the new Corsair RMx 650W
Case - not bad...

Here's a parts list

CPU, mobo, RAM
Combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2507600
Intel i7-6700K $370
Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 $170 AR
Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-2666 $93
-$35 combo discount
= $598

Cooler Thermalright HR-02 Macho Rev. B $53 (@ amazon) would be my first choice. It's a little more expensive through newegg. Good for a 4.5-4.6GHz OC.

Graphics card
Sapphire R9 390 8GB Nitro w/ backplate $315 AR
or Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming $310 AR ($30 less after rebate then MSI Gaming)

SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250GB $90 or 850 EVO 500GB $170

PSU EVGA 750 G2 $90 AR - no contest here. Great price, excellent quality, 10 year warranty. 650 G2 is a close second at $100 without rebate. Seasonic X650 is a little less good of a deal at $110.

Case NZXT H440 $120. Or if you want to save a bit here, Enthoo Pro is another excellent case for $100 (non-window version for $90)

Windows 10 64bit Home $93 @ amazon

= $1324 with GTX 970, 250GB SSD, 750 G2, Enthoo Pro
= $1449 with R9 390, 500GB SSD, 650 G2, H440
(after rebates and combo discounts )

Another option is to spend more on the graphics card cos that's what you'll be gaming with. XFX R9 Fury 4GB $550, Gigabyte GTX 980 Ti WF3 $620. If needed you can go with a cheaper CPU/mobo/RAM combo. i5-6600K + Z170 Pro Gaming $423 + Corsair LPX 2666 red $59

Finally.. you didn't mention anything about your monitor. What monitor are you planning to game on? 1080p or 1440p? 60hz or 144hz?
