I'm considering getting a crappy old machine, putting a tbsc in it and making it a dedicated music kiosk/jukebox.
what are some good pieces of software for either windows or linux that are designed for this kind of use?

Try this:

www.virtualmusicjukebox.com

I use it, works great, so far I have ripped over 500+ albums to my HD. All you do is organize the music into folders (artist folder, album sub-folder, then name/number the MP3's. Such as:

C:\music\Eagles\Hell Freezes Over\01 - Hotel California.mp3

Then, in that 'album' directory, you go out and find the cover art (usually from buy.com) and save the album art as 'cover.jpg'

You get the idea.......try the free sample. It limits you to 6 albums, but at least you can try it. If you like, it IS only 19.95

Good luck,
Fat Johnny
