Ultimate Ears problem :/

I have a pair of Triple.Fi 10's. I just got back from the gym, and noticed that the left side's volume has been dramatically reduced. I tested the cables to make sure it wasn't a cable issue. I don't know what could've gone wrong. I'm thinking sweat got into the left side. Any suggestions on what I should do? I already upgraded the cables too :/.

Balanced armature drivers and working out = not a good combo. Excessive sweat, then trying to use them, can destroy drivers.

I'd say leave them to dry out for a week or so and try to use them again. If same issue, time for new phones.

Using customs would be better for working out as they're initially designed for stage performers. So as long as you don't keep taking your customs in and out of your ears while you're working out, everything will be fine.

Same issues, given practicalities of use. I don't use my customs when they're potentially subject to sweat ingress.

I don't believe that your ear sweats, at least not inside, so unless you're somehow getting sweat into your ear, or letting the drivers hang such that they are getting sweat in them, I don't think that's the problem. I guess you could be letting your hair cover your ears or sweating so profusely that way, but you'd have to be sweating a lot and even then I'm skeptical that you'd be getting that much in your ear let alone inside the IEM itself.

Have you checked the player itself? You say you checked the cables, how did you do this? Check the tips (remove them) and see if there's anything in them or in the opening on the shell of the IEMs themselves. They might have just gone bad by no fault of yours.

I wouldn't be worried about sweat with customs, as plenty of performers abuse their customs and sweat a ton but its not an issue.

IEMs don't tend to make great exercise equipment because they aren't likely to sit in your ear well. With customs if the fit isn't stellar, or even if you don't have them put in well, and sometimes even if you do, the constant movement can't cause discomfort (it'll be bad if it keep breaking the seal for instance). Also, the noise isolation can be a safety issue.

Same thing happened to my SE530s for wearing them right after swimming on the beach. All IEM's have filters to prevent foreign stuff from going into the driver casing. If you wet this filter it attenuates sound a lot.

Use a hair dryer and at the lowest heat setting to dry up the filter 🙂

Not all have filters, not all have effective filters, and they don't necessarily stop all moisture getting in.

Leaving it to dry is the best option. As is getting something more sports specific for working out.
