WOW!!

I played Ultima I and II on my friend's Atari 800. We loaded them from cassette tapes -- pre-disk drive.

I played Ultima III on my IBM PCjr. How many of you here were even alive when the PCjr came out?? :)

Ah, the memories...

Ultima IV & V are two of the best all time games, ever.

When this CD collection first came out, it was a very brisk seller at a premium price-it was hard to find at $50.

There is a group based in England working on a 3D public domain version of Ultima I, sounds pretty good. Don't have the URL handy, but do a google search under Ultima I.

I remember those days playing ultima 1 on my apple II. And punching the notches on the floppy disk so I can use the other side.. 5 1/4 single sided single density were $45 for 10! ahhh back when times were slow and easy!

either i've been asleep for a few years and missed ultima 10,11,12&13 OR you mean VIII (8), not XIII (13). =)

XIII?!?! When did Ultima 13 come out? ;)

Anyhow, I have this box rusting on a shelf, cause I have never taken the time to install it (mostly won't run in windows I think) Maybe I will set up my retired box with a DOS boot and see if I can get it to run.

I played the first 5 On a combo of C64 and Ataris myself...

If anyone buys an extra one of these and wants to sell it, let me know. I don't have any staples around me.

I don't know how many times I went to school half asleep because of this game series.

I remember I had to shell out $300 to get 2MB on my 386 to play Ultima VI hahaha!

Hehe, I had three PCjr's....all about 4 feet wide since they were maxed out at 640K. (remember those 128K modules that added about 3 inches to the side of the machine).

How many people remember that Sierra developed Kings Quest I by special request of IBM to show off the graphics capabilities of the NEW Pcjr??

And how about that oh so advanced (though not terribly functional) infrared keyboard?

Ahh...the good old days...

I got the old Ultima I-VIII collection, installed it, and not a damn thing worked... None of them!
I think they were only made for old skool computers

yeah, but every time you entered a dungeon, you had to swap program and player disk.

Much easier with a 2 floppy setup.

I have the Apple orignal software, and receipt, in the ziplock bag it sold it....somewhere's in a closet with my Apple][....paid $2k for it back in 78'.....

Those games had funky requirements. Like you had to have 590K+ of conventional RAM and you had to configure EMS memory paging.

I remember those days of DOS games, though I was not there for the early games, I think i was only 3 or something when those games initially came out. I remember those memory settings, was such a long time ago, I recall I use to have to move certain things to himem and to use extended memory. I was such a newbie.

Ultima V was definitely the best of the lot. It was not only right before Ultima went 3D (boooooo!!!!), but you could attack something that was at a diagonal to you! I thought being able to move the attack cursor around, rather than just hit a+up or a+left, was the greatest thing.

I bought U9 when it came out, and it was so buggy and slow on my system, that a lot of users got together and Origin finally sent everyone a new updated "patched" cdrom for free. But even this patched version was buggy and choppy on my old computer. But guess what!!!! The graphics are finally somewhat smooth with my new 1.33GHZ system and highspeed graphics card!

WARNING
You can forget about running U7/U8 with a SBLive card in DOS. SBLive requires EMM386 for DOS emulation sound, and these games can't run with EMM386 because Origin used their own funky "VooDoo" memory manager. :( I've tried getting these games to run on my new system(dual boot DOS/WinXP), but it's too much of a headache and not even worth it. If only Origin would've written these games to use DOS Protected Mode, then maybe they would even work in WinXP.

It's been a while, so I don't have the URLs handy, but there were two different groups of people working on ways of getting U7 and U7 part 2 working on windows machines. One of them (Exult, I think?) completely replaced the rendering system and just used the base object files from the game. The other (called U7 in Windows, or something creative like that) was more of a straightforward wrapper.

I tried them both, and they both let me play two of the best games in the series, before 8 and 9 ruined the good name of Ultima.

hmm...I will have to search for this "Exult" or whatever, because I'd like to play U7 again too! Thanks, now off to the search engines...

Exult make U7 work in windows environment. You must start over though as the dos saved games don't cross over. Can you say doh!!

Best of luck.
