I recently purchased a Pioneer PC-based internal DVD Writer model DVR-A07XLA from Fry's Electronics. I physically installed the drive and it had no problems being recognized by my Microsoft Windows XP Professional (w/SP2) install, and was also recognized by the system BIOS at bootup.

I then proceeded to installed the accompanying software, which is a suite of applications from Ulead. After installation of this software and before rebooting I noticed that it placed a Ulead Calendar Cheaker device in the system tray. Went to Uleads website and they directed, if desired, the removal process, which was nothing more than to remove it from the Startup folder.

Ok, its not in the Startup folder so I choose to reboot the PC and see if it appears there. I log into Windows and I am immediate greeted with a 'stop' error message. You recognize these stop messages by the round, red dot containing a nice white X. The message is as follows:

Error #: -310
Error #: 81606
Not a Correct Index File.
Index file is exclusive, locked, or dos read-only---index file must be corrupt
S_STATUS

Ok, so I clock the Ok (or was it Continue?) button and I am immediately greeted with:

NsEngine Module (Send Error Report window)

Ok, I click on the 'click here' link in this window to see what the error report contains:

AppName: nsengine.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: c4dll.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 00022616

I then check out the technical details and note it created a txt file for sending if I allow a report to be sent. This txt file just shows the relevent files involved with what occurred. I chose not to send in a report and move beyond this condition and still the Ulead Calendar Checker is not in the Starup folder, but is sitting in the system tray. I also notice an additional tray icon for the NovaBackup Service.

BTW, this NovaBackup service is from NovaStor. NovaStor ... NoveStor ... nsengine ... could there be a relation? Well, I can select this NovaBackup tray icon, but I cannot find a service in the AdminTasks>Services in XP. Maybe its not seen because it didn't successfully get started and hence the message and trailing SendErrorReport? Being up for a good mystery I reboot again and the results are exact same.

Taking a gamble, I do a Windows Update but there isn't anything new. Go to NovaStor's website I have the latest version (7.1) and no patches for it are offered. Asking myself, "do I really need this utility?" I decide to remove it and reboot (actually, I powered down and back up again). Who said rebooting is only part of Windows' past?

Anyway, I logged back in and get no errors whatsoever. Damn you NovaStor! So, let this be a warning to anyone buying this retail Pioneer DVD Writer package. Install at your own risk. Now, on with testing the writer!
