What a sad dituation!

Senator Richard Lugar, who was sent by the White House to watch the vote, said: ?It is now apparent that a concerted and forceful programme of election-day fraud and abuse was enacted, with either the leadership or cooperation of governmental authorities.?

On Sunday, domestic and international election observers reported seeing large numbers of people being bussed around the country in what they said appeared to be a multiple-voting effort organised on Mr Yanukovich's behalf. Many of the buses seemed to have taken people from eastern regions where Mr Yanukovich is popular in order to vote in central and western regions where Mr Yushchenko is supported.

Elsewhere in central and western Ukraine, polling stations were attacked in apparent attempts to disrupt voting and possibly reduce the turnout by scaring voters. Mr Yushchenko's campaign said it was prevented from observing the voting in 2,500 of Ukraine's 33,000 polling stations. In the central region of Cherkasy, a policeman guarding a polling station was killed during an apparent attempt to steal ballot papers, although the interior ministry later said the attackers had been after the officer's gun.

Ukrainians need to do what Georgians did last year, or they will remain poor and backward for many more years.

The EU and US have judged it to be a fraudulent election, now they must encourage Ukraine to move towards them. Not too much the US could do, but the EU could offer a lot of things (trade concessions, money, and eventual membership).
