Heard about this "assassination" this morning, come to find it was all a sting operation!

Poor Putin, seems people are getting tired of you killing those you disagree with! I guess they traced the payment after he was "killed" ? IIRC the Brits wanted to do something like this awhile ago, but it never panned out.

Putin and his bratva need to be exposed, for Russians as much as anyone else. Nice work SBU, keep it up.

whoa, that is badass.

Heard the report of his assassination this morning. Kinda weird that they made this public so soon, or is that the intent? Let Russia know exactly what they know and make it very public? ....not gonna catch The Joker that way, though!

Sounds like his wife wasn't in on it, so that security detail from Poroshenko will probably come in handy pretty soon. Heh.

Had to be a sting op, otherwise why stage this fake kill, and why would the “victim” cooperate? I get the feeling that tracing the bounty payment was just one goal...they may have also been trying to flush out Ukrainian officials/security sympathetic to Russia/Putin and had some phones tapped.

The initial description in that report is confusing, but I think she knew something. They didn't have video or pictures or anything, just a public report that he was assassinated. In that fake report, it was his wife that discovered his bloody body....unless all that was also staged which is really fucked up. She and the daughter were also already under protection, so it sounds like the family was stashed in a safe house when the report was made--if she didn't know about the operation but also never found him, then the public report of her finding his body would have been odd. Likewise, I'm assuming that they already had the hired killer in custody as well as the Russian agent that made the payment--or at least everything they needed--before making the public report about the murder. The killer would know that he didn't carry out the operation.

Methinks it may have been related to Peskov's remarks on the 'killing' this morning. He delivered the usual 'Russia is a victim, you can't trust Ukrainians, Ukraine is not safe' tripe so maybe Poroshenko approved an immediate rebuttal of sorts? I would have liked to see Peskov's face when the news of the sting came out.

well, doesn't that kinda prove Peskov's comment, in a Trumptardian sorta way? "See! You can't trust them! They lied about the assassination! Deep state!"

Did not expect Reporters Without Borders and a few others to have a problem with this. Talk about a lack of empathy, not to mention being ignorant of basic game theory.

I think Babchenko addressed it perfectly: "To all those journalists who think I've crossed a red line, my friends, the moment you are paid a visit [by security agents] and then get asked, 'What do you want? Do you want to stay alive? Or do you want to preserve the ethics, chastity and the high moral ground of your profession?' Please, my friends, feel free to preserve the ethics, chastity and the high moral ground of your profession!" he said. "I chose to stay alive."

Remember folks, if comes down to you or them... Send flowers. No shame in wanting to live.

Very Fox-esque, I agree. Russia has levels of partisanship and conspiracy controversy that puts ours to shame, if I see something like that on pravda I won't be surprised at all. Then again, sometimes the only real difference is a time delay and language used.
