Ukraine’s accession to the EU would entitle Kyiv to about €186bn over seven years, according to internal estimates of the union’s common budget, turning “many” existing member states into net payers for the first time.

[...]

Ukraine would also qualify for €61bn in payments from the EU’s cohesion funds, which aim to improve infrastructure in poorer member states. With nine additional member states, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta would no longer be eligible for cohesion funding, the study estimates.

[...]

“These numbers aren’t going to work for anyone,” said Mujtaba Rahman, managing director for Europe at the Eurasia Group. “They make clear that root and branch reform of the EU budget and its major policies will be needed if Ukraine is to ever join, or that the entire Ukraine question will have to be dealt with innovatively and outside of existing EU budget structures.”

^^^ Contentious path to accession, to say the least.

This is going to be subject to a lot of negotiation over the coming years. Certainly an easier proposition than Turkey though lol.

The thing that tickles me is that we already have Hungary to deal with and to some degree Poland, it's all good and well that Ukraine is taking all these initiatives to curb corruption and fight for democracy, EU and NATO... So what if Putin has success with a soft power coup in Kyiv the coming years after a "peace deal"? The way the EU is structured right now is that every single member nation has VETO powers. The level of obstruction and 5th column work we have to deal with from Viktor Orban right now is mind boggling... and again we cant just eject Hungary cause... rules I guess.. I think we'd have to restructure some of the cores rules of this union to make it more resilient towards member nations going rouge interim.

I wonder what would happen if the major countries simply made EU 2.0 fixing the major problems then "Simply" leave EU an let all those who are not ready to join the EU 2.0 continue in the smoldering ruins of EU. :p

Why would the major countries opt to leave and form a separate union when they hold the major levers of power in the bloc?

It was more of a rhetorical question at the expense of the UK and their idiocy in leaving the bloc.
Ah, but they should only leave if they actually have something better, and not try to thing they can recreate their former empire... :/
