Wow CIA must be putting some big pressure on them Brits to get this fake rape cover moved along so they can snatch him in Switzerland.

Serious enough to go marching in the Equadorian embassy. Seems a bit over the top for some "suspicious Rape charge"

What if he did rape her? Do you know for a fact that he didn't? He should be tried as charged to see what the real facts are.

Why bring the US into it. It is between the UK, Sweden and Ecuador.

the rape allegations are just soooooooo convenient

"We want to be very clear, we're not a British colony. The colonial times are over," Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said in an angry statement after a meeting with President Rafael Correa.

Ouch!

Sounds like they're getting serious pressure from somebody, that's for sure. If it were anyone else, they wouldn't bother at this point.

Wait, so we have a director from the US who was found guilty, and fled overseas before sentencing and oh well; but someone not even convicted gets this kind of attention?

If you are caught keying a mafia kingpin's car, do you think you will be allowed to run and hide?

This guy is an idiot and deserves to rot. He did nothing to stop the IMC, all he did was get some informants killed and embarass some embassy workers.

Hope the FSB gets him first.

Assuming of course this isn't Ecuador grandstanding or overreacting to an offhand comment by a beat cop or something, but is in fact the position of the UK government, it would imply someone is getting pressured at a very high level behind the scenes. One country violating the sovereignty of another merely to extradite to a third country is unheard of and unthinkable in normal circumstances. For the most part countries won't even violate the sovereignty of another nation even if the person they are going after broke their own laws.

What if he did rape her? Do you know for a fact that he didn't? He should be tried as charged to see what the real facts are.

The fact is that Julian isn't charged with anything.

Two females, with whom Julian had had one night stands over a three day period got together and decided to accuse him of "Sex by Surprise."

After being given permission to leave Sweden, prosecutors ostensibly decided later that they wanted to question Julian in the equivalent of an American Grand Jury Context.

Julian offered to testify in video formats but the prosecutor refused.

Please understand that I am sympathetic to the US State Department and their loss of a quarter million secret documents. And I am also sympathetic to the Military that saw their secret communications posted on the Web and published in the New York Times as well...

But Julian didn't steal those documents. And he wasn't responsible for the failed security.

And if anyone died as a result of those security lapses, then the people who were responsible for setting up that failed information security are responsible. Not Julian. And not the New York Times and the other newspapers that also published the documents.

My perception is that if you have ineffective computer security, set up and utilized by incompetent people, then you are likely to have issues.

For example, if you allow screwballs, like Bradley Manning, to download, burn to DVD, and distribute gigabytes and gigabytes of secret data then I think it likely that you have more serious problems than Julian Assange.

From my perspective, the real problem is ineffective computer security organized by incompetent people.

Taking Julian Assange out of circulation doesn't fix that.

Nor, does it seem likely to fix Sweden's sex by surprise issue.

I find it rather embarrassing that the Brits are threatening to revoke diplomatic status for Ecuador's embassy over (supposedly) having to extradite Assange to Sweden. If I'm not mistaken, embassies are considered sovereign territory under international law. How could it possibly make sense to commit an act of war (assault on sovereign embassy) over a guy who is accused of run-of-the-mill assault? We all know the real reason they want Assange (revenge for all the leaks), but the Brits are (laughably) claiming that it's all over their obligation to extradite him to Sweden over the charges he faces there.

:thumbsdown::thumbsdown: to the UK.

I don't like Assange or what he's done, but threatening to violate international law and break into the embassy to kidnap someone is idiotic.

London had warned Ecuador in writing earlier in the day that a 1987 British law permits it to revoke the diplomatic status of a building if the foreign power occupying it "ceases to use land for the purposes of its mission or exclusively for the purposes of a consular post." Its Foreign Office said later in statement that it is Britain's "obligation to extradite Mr. Assange."

yeah good luck going through on that threat and not fucking up relationships with everyone else.

if they raid the embassy, ecuador should nuke london. :awe:

I read about this last night on LRC and I am disgusted that the govt of the u.k. is doing this.

Julian assange is a wanted man only because he defied the state by giving out its "secrets".

I agree, just because something is allowed under British law doesn't mean it's allowed under international law. How much do you think the US would like it if China decided to go in to extract an asylum seeker from the US embassy to China? I think there would be a few marines there that would say "over my dead body", and the US would (correctly) see it as an act of war. This is no different.

The guy is not even accused of committing a crime in the UK.

Nope, the whole row is (supposedly) because he's accused of a crime in Sweden and the UK is obligated to extradite him. The Brits are really embarrassing themselves with this.

I wonder why Ecuador granted him asylum. They must know it's not the wisest thing they could do.

Ecuador is part of a block of socialist nations in south america (the kind who like Chavez), I'm sure they were happy to poke a finger in the eye of the great satan.

People are as sick of the west's bullshit as the citizens who live here are. WikiLeaks might be one of the best things that has happened to our government in decades. If this guy did rape someone then he deserves jail time but it would be pretty easy to get someone to come forward with a false charge in order to get your hands on him. And that kind of action is what needs to stop.

Pretty bold for the UK to threaten to violate Equadorian sovereignty over this matter. Even if they don't breach the embassy, there's no way for them to take Assange out of the country without him being stopped and arrested.

Game over for this dirt bag.

Exactly.

It's reminds me of the Waco incident.

1) They are a wacky cult. Followed by the the citizens saying "Freedom of Religion."
2) They have guns! Enough to wage war on America! Followed by the citizens saying "Freedom to Bear Arms."
3) They are child molesters! Send in the tanks! Citizens are stupid enough to say "Lets get them!"

With Julian. They just went to step 3. Rape is nearly impossible to prove/disprove, but it will win over the hearts and minds of the idiots.

Bucket full of fucks given is empty.

So he was granted asylum based on lies (ie, that Sweden would extradite him to the US, which is against the European Convention. He can sit and wait in the embassy for as long as he wants. Sooner or later, he will crack.

Claiming the accusations against him are a product of US exerting influence over the Swedish government is ridiculous.

Assange is fucked. He can't leave Britain so the granted asylum is worth something between jack and shit. He's a paranoid narcissist and now he has painted himself up in a corner. Ecuador is also really going out on a limb here disrespecting a European arrest order like this.
