The keyboard in question has the backslash to the right of the left Shift key (which is pretty typical for a UK keyboard layout). This key works fine on a new Win81 install on a system with a PS/2 socket, but using a PS/2 to USB adapter results in that key not working (the rest do). Eh?

I suppose what I ought to do is compare what keyboard layout is being installed in either case. I just wonder what the heck the adapter is doing.

I had another look at this problem, one thing that is confusing me is that I can't find the settings for specifying the keyboard layout.

I've found the options for specifying the keyboard locale (CP > Region > Language Preferences), but there's only one UK layout and it doesn't show the backslash key left of Z. The same even applies on my Win7 PC. On the Win81 PC, the keyboard is listed in device manager as a standard HID keyboard, and on my Win7 PC, it's listed as a standard PS/2.

Not that I've had to look at this sort of issue in a long time, but I would have expected to find somewhere the settings for specifying how many keys the keyboard has (you know, 101, or 105/6, something like that anyway).

Argh - I have a spare PS/2 -> USB adapter, which works fine with regard to this problem... so is the adapter reporting a type of keyboard, does it simply assume what type of keyboard it is?
