UK fans of MSI K7T PRO2 you can buy your board from here!

Yep, ordered mine from Scan on Friday, due to arrive on Monday (20th) along with a Promise Ultra 100 controller (I've got 5 IDE devices). Can't wait to get rid of my KT7-RAID and put something decent in...

Y'think I should get this board for a mate I'm building a machine for then? I was gonna go for an Abit KT7, but I ain't heard much about the K7T Pro2. I assume it's got all the features of the Abit, but without the personality? 🙂

cheers

tweakr,MSI make great boards (both on quality & stability)read Anandtechs review of the new MSI K7T PRO2 from HERE

🙂

Jeez, I was all set to buy either the ASUS A7V or the Abit KT7 and now this comes along and I'm not sure any more. I even posted a question asking which one I should get mythread. Now I've read some discussions and it sounds like the A7V and KT7 can be a little unstable at times and that they have compatability problems. This is my first time building a machine so I want something that isn't going to give me too much trouble. This board sounds rock solid from the reviews, but the performance of it seems to be a concern. Check out this review at

Any thoughts?

Well, I got my board last night along with a Promise ATA-100 controller. I took my old crash-a-minute KT7-RAID out, swapped it for my new board, stuck all the cards in (modem, GTS2, ATA-100, sound), plugged everything else in and turned it on... And it all worked! It managed to boot into Windows without any problems using my set up from my old KT7-RAID. It attempted to find drivers for the Promise card and various other things, so I installed the Promise one and disabled the rest from the BIOS. And then I updated the BIOS to the 2000/11/03 version (1.8?), reformatted everything and reinstalled Windows from scratch. The board took everything I threw at it without any problems at all - I am even using ACPI which I wasn't before as it hated my Abit board. The only thing I need to do now is reinstall Linux.

One little problem: my internal modem causes a system hang-up when it's dialling (it's a US Robotics V90). However, my external modem works a treat... I fired up Sandra and the modem is sharing IRQ5 with the USB controller, which I'll try disabling and attempt to dial up again, after reinstalling the modem drivers.

Performance? Can't say I notice much difference, really. All the figures in the comparative reviews I've read (incl. Anand's) have fairly similar results.

To conclude: buy this board now! (Or the 'A' version). It kicks ass. If this carries on like this, MSI have got themselves a life-long customer... [unless my PS2 which I get on Friday is better...]

Timco your another happy MSI customer, anyway glad to hear everything is working OK,have you checked the latest Price for memory at Crucial,I could not resist another 128mb CAS2 for my MSI K7T PRO board at those prices.

🙂

Well, seeing as I got a letter from my bank telling me I had exceeded my overdraft limit, I think I'll hold off buying more stuff (good timing for PS2 on Friday...). My modem worked after I disabled the USB stuff in the BIOS.

Then I tried to install Linux (SUSE 7) which didn't like my Promise card one bit. I ended up hooking my hard disc up to the ATA66 motherboard socket and installing it on there, swapping it back to the Promise and editing the linux setup... Great...

Still no crashes... 🙂
