I notice this client in OK's proxy: lal-98-79.Reshall.Berkeley.EDU It seems to come from Berkeley then go to OK then back to Berkeley. Whoever this is, with all the reliability issues involved with submitting from off campus wouldn't it by safer and quicker to just go straight over the network? Wouldn't that help the rest of us have more bandwidth?

Maybe they like living dangerously.

Maybe the like OK's proxy better than any in the rest of the world.

Check out this scenario.

OK downloads WU from Berkeley - OK sends WU to client (back to Berkeley) - client sends result to OK (from Berkeley) - OK sends result to Berkeley

See how this can get sticky if there were a large enough amount of units being processed like that? And with the bandwidth problems we are going through any amound of bandwidth conservation that can be do IMHO should be.

Yeah, but when Berkeley goes down, or lags to Hell, they probably have a better chance of getting WU's from OK's, even though they are at Berkeley. Plus, OK's sorts for duplicate WU's, routes the best kind for your OS towards you, etc.

I would think that it would be faster to just go directly because wouldn't it just hit their router and be sent back to the seti servers, basically jsut traversing their network?

I don't mean to bash anyone with this post either. I purposely did not look up to see who's client this is and I'm not expecting anyone to step forward and claim it. However, some word from someone on the Berkeley campus about connectivity would be interesting.

Yes, indeedy, that is me. I've been using OK's proxy since the beginning because that's what was recommended on this forum in case the Berkeley servers went down for maintanance or whatever, which has happened a couple times.

Last week during the height of the bandwidth "crisis" I couldn't upload work units at all directly to the servers, but I could still upload to OK's and get new work units. Besides, my humble fleet only pumps out about 5 WU/day, so I doubt I'll have much impact on OK's server.

Yes, when all the servers are up and running, I can download a work unit directly in about 1-2 seconds through the network here. But, I like all the stats telling me AR and crunch times for each work unit, not to mention the extra buffer between me and the SETI servers.

Your suprised? 🙂

That is interesting that going to OK is quicker than going directly from on campus. Thanks for the info Logix.

I would guess several of TA's proxies are more reliable than a lot of major universities! 🙂

hehe this is a cool thread! Hey Logix, do you have setiqueue installed on your machines? 🙂 It does awesome stats-keeping, and would keep your butt off OK's server! HAHA I'm just joshin' you 🙂

I have around a three-day catch set up through OrangeKid, by the way, Thank you OrangeKid!🙂🙂🙂 and saw a lot of grief apparently caused in the first half hour even? Or maybe the first day? But thanks to the cache I didn't take a hit, every pc was just happy-pappy (my setiqueue sure was chatty then 😉 but it's endearing 😀

Anyway, since everyone doesn't have it set like that... anyone know if there are disadvantages for keeping a 3 day supply?

<<anyone know if there are disadvantages for keeping a 3 day supply>>

Well, I keep 7 days of WU's on my home and work computers, and my remote systems keep 3 or 4 days worth. On top of that, I have probably 4 days worth on OK's proxy. Seems to work quite well. You won't see any problems with "expired" WU's unless you hold on to them for a REALLY long time - say more than a month or two...
