Uhhhgh.... Consider this a followup to this thread.

The reason it flooded is because the drain pipe wasn't draining fast enough.. Seems simple enough, so we bought a bottle of drain-o.. Here's where it gets very strange.

Yesterday, the carpet in the living room was all wet.. we figured it was from the water comming through the wall, cause there was a lot of water.. Well, it's not. It's wet again now, and all we've been doing is putting water down the washing machine drain. After we were messing with the washing machine drain a while, we heard a strange sound come from the pipe..... but it still didn't drain right.

Now, the floor here is made out of concrete, and the pipes were run through the concrete. That means that one of the pipes is broken, most likely worn through from age.. That wouldn't be a problem(well, realitivly..) if it was just the washingmachine pipe that was worn through.. Now here's where it gets even weirder.

ALL the drains in the house are now slow. It didn't used to be like this before we used the drain-o and heard the strange noise from the pipe.. The kitchen sink, bathtub, and worst of all.. the freakin TOILET all drain slow. Whats worse, in the case of the toilet.. the water comes back up through the bathtub drain.

WTF? We're thinking that the drain-o loosened a clog that was in the pipe close to the washingmachine, and therefor wasn't effecting the rest of the house, but that weird noise we heard was the clog moving along, and now it's farther down in the line, and is effecting the rest of the house.

The thing that I don't get is that the main drain pipe from the house should be huge... I believe 4" is the standard. What the fsck could possibly be clogging it up?

We poured the bottle of drain-o into the washing machine drain, and I went out and mowed the lawn. After I mowed the lawn, I came in and took a shower, and everything was normal with the drains. After my shower, we went out and checked to see if the drain-o had worked, and that's when we heard the strange noise, and found out that all the drains in the house are all screwed up.

WTF?

We rent, so we called the landlord.. we won't have to pay for any of this, but it's really going to suck if they have to bring jackhammers in here and tear the floor up..

I doubt my dad will want to deal with it, we will probably just end up moving if it's anything major.

This sucks. What are we going to do if someone has to go to the bathroom?

:disgust::frown:🙁

good your renting.. cause I would say that pipes are galvanised pipes and that's causing the problem..

we had that issue in this buidling.. ugh!

drain-o didnt work .. i called a plumber he ran his pipe cleaned it up and 2 days later it was back..
needless to say they had to replace a whole lot of pipes.. and luckily our building is wood construction from the 50's.

Bummer

What has probably happened is that the pipe under the floor has failed and did so long ago. Now the pipes in the soil have collapsed (or been invaded by roots, clogging the drain and backing up the water.

It's a big deal but some plumbers who know what they are doing and use a backhoe and some concrete saws can put it all back right in a few days.

Called the landlord, plumber will be here in a half an hour.

Damn, it's late.. I don't see what he could possibly do.

Update:

It's fixed.

It was, indeed, tree roots. We have a HUGE Willow tree in our yard(The thing must be well over 100 years old), and they replaced an 8 - 12' section of pipe that was about 3 feet away from the base of the tree.
