UHaul sucks.

We're about to move, so I checked (via UHaul's website) what trailers we could pull ('96 Intrepid, Class 2 hitch). They listed a 5x10 as available for this year/make/model/hitch -- when they went to pick it up this morning, we found that it's too heavy (2200lb trailer, 2000lb tow rating on the Intrepid). Fortunately, a 5x8 only weighs 900lb..but unfortunately, we have to fit six persons' worth of stuff in it. Losing two feet off the back isn't going to help things any..but at least this one was cheaper. 😛

Let us know when the wheels fall off the trailer. 😛
There are so many u-haul horror stories on this forum alone it's not funny.
Last time I moved I made the mistake of using them. They gave me this manual transmission truck that I swear to god was from the 60's. The biggest thing I remember was the lights didn't work. Nobody who was following me knew when I was braking or signaling.

I've used them for an in town move and the breaks were failing. That was a fun drive...oversized truck with extrash!tty breaks.

you should have taken longer breaks then! By the way how were the brakes?

Moral of the story is a Dodge Intrepid is not sufficient to move 6 people's stuff.

It's not really UHaul's fault you can't pull the bigger trailer, their only fault is in getting your hopes up. 🙂

This is why you do not use U-hual website!

go into the store and talk to people. the website says anything to get you to rent.

I rented a 28ft truck. the website said it was held for me and i could pick it up at 9am. They would email me confirmation a day before.

Well no email. so i called early in the morning and NO TRUCK. They found one i could get that was over 100 miles from my house and no they would not take off mileage. Eventually they allowed me to take 2 14ft trucks from a local shop. They also took of the rent for the 2nd truck. But i ended up starting moving at 3pm! i lost 4 people t hat was going to help me move.

I will NEVER use them again.

last one i saw was an ancient toyota my dad rented. the mirrors were rusted in place, the wipers fell off when my dad turned them on, it was only running on 4 of its 6 cylinders, and it made a variety of scary, funny, or just interesting noises, including scraping sounds whenever you turned left, and a giant "CLUNK" while we were idling at a stoplight.
also in our portfolio of u-haul stories: a broken down truck on the side of the highway, too many "disappeared" reservations to count, being blamed for damage that was already on the trucks, etc.

fvck that company. fvck every one of their employees. fvck every one of their trucks.

on a side note, i highly recommend public storage. the trucks are always new and running great, and the service is much better.

Where did they go? How do you lose people? What did you do with them?😕

well people have lives and can't stand around all day waiting for us to start moving.

we were sopposed to start at 9am. we didnt start until 3pm. we should have been finished and drinking beer on my driveway.

went from 7 guys down to 3 of us. good thing the 2 that stayed were very strong and in great shape.

When I was a kid, I watched a compact truck towing a Uhaul trailer coming out of LA flip on it's side, skid across 5 lanes of traffic, and smack head on into the center median because a Uhaul trailer's tire failed. The driver was okay, the passenger had a large gash on her arm, but thier baby died. (not in a car seat)

When we moved my grandma up from Az, they got a Uhaul truck. It handled like crap and got 3MPG. Over a 600 mile trip it used 200 gallons of gas. When we moved my aunt down to Az (same place), they got a Ryder. I was the driver this time. It was an International chassis w/ a diesel. It got 14MPG. We used 43 gallons. It handled great, even on some twisty mountain roads, was comfortable, and handled passes at speed.

With today's prices, the Uhaul truck would cost $794+about $600 in gas. The Ryder (now budget) costs $923+$129 in gas. About a $346 savings from getting a truck that costs $129 more.

Well, we're downsizing considerably anyway..lol

We did get a relatively new trailer -- only a year old. It's in very good shape, actually. 🙂

If Penske rented trailers, I would've tried to go with them - Penske trucks are great..clean and usually new. I am not a fan of UHaul trucks.

Rent a truck and never use a website for information on that type of stuff.
If picking up a phone and making a call is too much, you seriously need to reconsider your position on breathing air.

If you want to pay for a truck, be my guest. I prefer a $120 trailer over a $900 truck, thankyouverymuch. Not everybody has a few extra thousand $$ kicking around for a move. 😉
