So i go to rent a truck on friday to move a couple of things that i had bought. mainly a futon. I had reserved it from 6pm-8pm, but my friend needed some stuff moved too. i asked the CSR behind the counter what would be the penalty if i brought the van back past 8, and she told me as long as i bring it back before 830am the next morning, i wouldn't receive a penalty. i was dumbfounded...what was the point of reserving a vehicle if they were gonna let you keep it out till the next morning anyways? so i asked the csr three different times, as long as i bring it back anytime before 830am the next morning things will be ok? and each time she says yes...so im all happy like kicka**!!

so i go about my merry way moving stuff, i fill the tank back up, and bring it back to uhaul around 9pm it took me all of 3 hours to move everything w00t! but i get to uhaul and they are closing and they wont take my truck back. they told me to wait 15 minutes for the "night" guy to come around and charge me 20 bucks to return it. what??!??!? 20 bucks? they said it was no charge as long as i return it before 830am...well that is only if i return it during office hours...WHICH THEY DID NOT TELL ME! and night hours are from 9pm-5am so what happens? the night guy is 15 minutes late, and when he gets there, he proceeds to chat with co-workers that are leaving for the night for another 10-15 minutes before helping me out...argggg

the next morning i call up the manager to complain about how i was never told of the policy of charging me 20 bucks after closing...basically he told me that signs were all over the place...i only saw one, and i only saw it when i was returning it, he was rude, and finally he says to me "you must think we're open 24/7" and i said yes....and he hangs up on me. so for the next few hours after that im playing phone tag, and finally they tell me i have to speak to the general manager on monday. i call on monday, and shes not around to pick up the phone, they take down my name and number and told me she would call back. monday...nothing....tuesday i call them...shes still not around...they take my number down and i dont get a call back...

they owe me 20 bucks...what should i do? call amex and tell them they overcharged me? or keep playing phone tag?

Aslo, make sure you go HERE and fill out a complaint. I, too, had a sh!tty experience with them, and even though no money dispute was involved I received a prompt apology. Whether or not they did anything to the jack-leg I dealt with I do not know.

I, too, have had horrible experience with U-Haul. I rented one of their trailors to move stuff into my apartment from Houston to Austin and returned the truck to the nearest location, like the told me. This was mid august. Just last week, I look at my online bank statement and U-Haul has taken out an additional $550.00. To make a long story short, complaining works! I called them and basically ripped them a new one, and within 2 days (for bank processing) the money was back into my account.

OK this is important:

1) Uhaul is unreliable, rents bad trucks, and is generally something you want to avoid. Only thing is they are VERY cheap!

2) Anyway the important point: Last year I had a 12 month contract with a gym. I left the area and I asked 3 seperate people and they all said I could break the contract no problem. I put in the correct written cancel, etc. and the gym kept charging my visa. FINALLY the head person there said it was unbreakable and clearly written in the contract (I never read it). Do you know what I did? I wrote them basically saying "I was told when I signed the contract originally, and at other times, that this contract was breakable without penalty. I've spoken to several of your employees who have all said the same thing. If you continue to charge my visa I will dispute the charges." They then stopped.

The moral of what I just wrote above is: I don't care how many Uhaul signs are up saying that you'll be charged a late fee. As far as I'm concerned if an employee - a representative - of the company on 3 seperate occasions says that you will not be charged a fee you will NOT be charged a fee. That $20 is bullsh*t. Dispute it, and if Uhaul gets upity tell them that you did all that you could to contact their general manager who never returned your call (there's a surprise), and that their employee on duty told you three times there would be no late charge.

Other agreements aside I can't stand the fact that some companies have useless f*&king employees and then when you do what the employee says the company doesn't own up to the responsibility that they should honor - within reason - what an employee states as truth. I've gone through it so many times over the last few months where people at companies/agencies have no fuggin idea about stuff and just tell you BS. Well now your money is on the line and it shouldn't be. The only reason you took it back late is because you specifically asked if you'd pay a late fee and were told NO. Screw Uhaul and dispute that charge.

Skoorb's wrong, unforuntately. Speech is much less legally binding than writing. I'm rather surprised the gym left you off of the contract. They could have technically gone to court and said "Here's the contract. Here's the wording. Here's your signature."

Do not rely on what CSRs say. The papers that you sign are what really matters and what will be admissible in a legal setting. If you don't like what is written in the contract, cross it out and initial it.

Well although I was in the wrong legally and I agree that they could have enforced the original agreement, and Uhaul could enforce this one as well, from a "treat your customers with respect" standpoint it's possible that UHaul may give in - just as my gym did. Although I'd signed a contract they realized they'd given me the run around and I was pissed and that's bad for business having somebody pissed at you.

And now uhaul, over $20, has had a bad message posted that hundreds of people will read. That's silly on their part, and they'd do well to say "Although legally you owe us that $20 we appologize for hiring an imbocile, so here is your $20 back. In the future there is a late fee, but we appologize for this misunderstanding." With enough persistance that may happen.

my bro had the same thing happen to him at a gym, he thought the contract was for 3 months instead of 12. So, he went up there and said he would like to cancle. They said no. He said well your not getting any of my money. They said 'Watch me'. He just closed his bank account and openned a new one. after more harrasment from the gym he told them to sue him for every penny he had. Which was just about 100$ to his name. His house/car was in my fathers name.
