Iraqi Officials: Fallujah Mission 'Accomplished'
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,138471,00.html
FALLUJAH, Iraq ? U.S. troops have "occupied" the entire city of Fallujah, leading Iraqi officials to declare on Saturday the mission "accomplished."

There were no more major concentrations of insurgents still fighting, U.S. military officials said. Artillery and airstrikes also ended at nightfall.

U.S. military officials said Saturday that American troops had now "occupied" the entire city of Fallujah and there were no more major concentrations of insurgents still fighting. Artillery and airstrikes also ended after nightfall.

Iraqi officials acknowledged that the two most wanted figures in the city ? Jordanian terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Sheik Abdullah al-Janabi ? had escaped the fighting. At least 30 of Zarqawi's lieutenants had been killed, officials told FOX News.

But after nearly a week of intense urban combat, U.S. officers said resistance had not been entirely subdued and that it still could take several days of fighting to clear the final pockets.

At least 1,200 insurgents have been killed since the battle for Fallujah (search) began four days ago, U.S. military officials estimated.

Officials told FOX News on Saturday they believe about 400 enemy fighters may still be hiding out inside the Sunni Muslim stronghold, with 250 in the south and 150 in the north.

Twenty-five American troops were killed and about 170 wounded in the fighting. Officials said seven Iraqi soldiers were also been killed.
Those U.S. officials better hope ol' Zell doesn't get a hold of them!

"Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator.

And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators. "

Go sick 'em, Zell!!!

The whole thing has been an occupation, ever since Bush's stupid photo op on the aircraft carrier. We rebuild just enough to taunt the insurgents to blow it up again. What a farce this whole thing has been. We haven't liberated anything, people are still poor, and live in constant fear.

Zell Miller needs to wake up and smell the stormtroopers...

The Marines of the last 50 years have been largely rapid-reaction imperial oppressors.

Better hope it's not on the list to be "liberated" the American way. ;)

Nah am calm if it wasn't for NASH(Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis) I'd be with my little brother fighting but now am stuck waiting for a liver transplant.I just don't like this attitude toward the soldiers that they are killers and relentless murderers from ppl that are not there and follow what they get from the media.

Liberation or occupation, they did a nice job killing those 1,200 'insurgents', even when they were women and children.

One more thought, you'd think they would have learned to be more careful with "Mission Accomplished" by now.

From BBC.

Eyewitness: Ghost city calls for help

As US-led troops battle rebels in the Iraqi city of Falluja, aid agencies have warned that civilians are left with little food and no drinking water. The BBC News website spoke by phone to Fadhil Badrani, an Iraqi journalist and resident of Falluja who reports regularly for Reuters and the BBC World Service in Arabic.

We are publishing his and other eyewitness accounts from the city in order to provide the fullest possible range of perspectives from those who are there:

"A family came to me last night, asking if I knew anywhere they could get hold of some food.

When I mentioned that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat had died, they were shocked.

"It's a conspiracy," they said. "They have killed him so that his death overshadows our plight in the news."

When people in Falluja feel the world is not interested in their fate, they start asking if the media is doing its job.

A father who lost two children in the bombing wanted to know if everything I was reporting was actually being broadcast.

Mosque risk

This city smells of explosives and decaying flesh.

It is a ghost town. In between the fighting, there are periods of absolute, eerie silence.

Goats patrol the deserted streets of Falluja
Many of the people have fled. The streets are empty, as are a lot of houses.

For those that are still here, the vacant houses left behind by the refugees can themselves become a refuge - a place to go when their own neighbourhoods are under bombardment.

I have lost track of the days of the week. I barely realised when Friday came and went.

Of course, there was no question of going to the mosque.

All the mosques are now targets because they have been used by both sides in this conflict, the fighters and the US forces.

Elusive figures

With no fresh food coming in, those people that are still here have been surviving on a diet of dates.

US soldiers hold much of Falluja by day.

The night belongs to the fighters. Under cover of darkness, they regroup and receive fresh weapons and ammunition.

They are elusive figures. I have seen them in action, firing mortars and grenades at American troops.

Anyone who moves around at night is a target. The fighters can shoot you if they mistake you for an American.

The Americans, who leave some snipers behind in the city every night, will get you if they think you are a fighter."

Try adding the phrase 'once again' between the word Fallujah and your first explanation point.

I sleep soundly at night knowing that our military, the mightiest in the world, is able to conquer a city...over and over. ;)

Ayup...one city at a time. Too bad it's been the same city a few times over already.
