Two year old PS2 that I have the other day I turned it on and controller port 1 no longer works. Everything else works. This PS2 is now a DVD player; I can load a game and go through menu options in a dvd with no problem, and although I can do the same with a game it seems that NFS at least doesn't allow you to use controller port 2 for a one player game. Is this an unusual problem in the PS2 or am I missing something?

EDIT: I can't get the damn thing open. All I can see are two weird holes that don't do anything. How are these opened?

That really blows. Strange that a port would bust before something like the dvd drive.

Tried two controllers and they each work in port 2. Rebooting the machine and hot swapping and all that does nothing to fix the problem. Controller port 1 just ain't workin!

Only problem is I live in CA, and thats just a little far for you to dive to get it fixed.

A static discharge could take out a port pretty easily, actually.

They are the real meal deal!
3rd party ones are more apt to get flaky.

Here are your options IMHO:

* Call repair shops in B'ham and see what they charge for *checking* and/or fixing a burned controller port. Expect a WIDE range of rates.
* Call a more distant repair shop just to see if the rates are better.
* Trade your PS2 and a couple of games in at EB for a spankin new Xbox Sega bundle (only half kidding about this one, and please everybody don't turn this into a fanboy flame-fest)

BTW: If you go the Xbox route, then I will enjoy kicking your bootay on Xbox Live :D

Trust me I would, but they will certainly check the ports and realize that port 1 is dead. That's a definite option if not for that fact.

I assume you are referring to the trade-in, and NOT me kickin your bootay on XBL, right? :p
According to the original thread about this trade-in offer over in Hot Deals, it didn't sound like they were very picky about the shape...I mean...as long as it hasn't been steamrolled, it might be worth a shot.

Here are some relevant comments from the thread (which became a damn fanboy whine-fest :|)
OK... Let's get back to this deal.. I just called my EBGAMES store here in Chicago... YES! They are providing a swap... What is even better is that they give you a free dvd kit, 2 free games and of course a new xbox... I own a PS2 and would still want it if not for the fact that it is slowly dying on me...
And an even better quote for you Skoorb
How good of shape does the PS2 have to be in. Do they need all the cables and controller too? Thanks.
Yes, they need cables and controller, but neither the PS2 nor the cables need to work.
We traded in a dead PS2 and a dog-chewed controller, making this a Hot Deal.
I think it's prolly worth a shot, my man. Remember, there are 2 EB's for you to try in B'ham--Galleria and Brookwood Village.

I'm gonna call and see what they have. Unfortunately the only game I have at the moment is Needforspeed hot pursuit II, and since controller port one is broken I don't know what I'd get for standard trade ins :( I'll check though.

Of course this can probably be fixed for less than $50, and then the PS2 used would be worth at least $130 anyway. I wasn't really looking to get rid of it, but it's now nothing more than a DVD player until I get this junk fixed.

AH I just called. It needs to be three games, but the PS2 has to be in perfect working order according to Galleria. I asked about a new Xbox and they are selling for $200 with two free games (Sega GT and jetset radio) that you can use in at time of purchase for a $25 trade in if you don't want those particular games. Course, that doesn't include the DVD kit, so I don't know about all this now! I really should just get the controller port 1 repaired...

Found 6 of them but one end still seemed to be really locked in there. Short of snapping plastic i couldn't find the last thing holding it in.

That's the Galleria. Sometimes they are cool, and sometimes they aren't. There is someone you should ask for...you'll usually get better response. Prolly best to show up with hardware in hand...and let them check it out. If they think they are gonna be selling some Xbox stuffs to you in the future, I'll bet they'd make the trade-in. You'd still need to score a couple of cheap PS2 games that weren't on their "secret" exclusion list tho.

Sega GT is a NICE racing game (one of the best on Xbox). JSRF is a "love-hate" title for most folks. I enjoy it immensely...others don't.

The free DVD kit is a rebate offer from MS, which has been extended until the end of November. So that would still be in play for you

I'd find out how much someone is gonna charge. Is it worth $30 or less...yes. It is worth more than $30 to repair...maybe. Is it worth more than $50? Only you can be the judge of that.

Skoorb, try this..

PS2 Link

its a post at dvdtalk.com, and this guy bought a broken ps2 (controller port 1 not working), and how he just used some inexpensive thermal grease to fix it.

he coated the male plugs in the grease, plugged it in, and it worked

good luck, hopefully that will work. if not, at least it didnt do any harm.
