At the end of this school year I have to return my school-issued laptop since I will not be returning in the fall. I am at home for the next week and so I don't have access to the contract right now, but I wonder if they're going to try to charge me for a new screen because of some scratches on mine? Wouldn't a couple small scratches on a tablet LCD be considered normal wear and tear and not "damage"? I mean it really is completely unavoidable. I am the most careful person in the world with my equipment and I have no idea where the couple scratches I have came from.

I think as long as it works and is usable, you will be alright. If the scratches were as unavoidable as you said they were, then all of the returned computers will probably have them.

How can scratches be unavioidable?

In order for the surface to be scratched; you had to either layed something on it or put put it face down on something.

One can protect the screen from either happening; therefore the question stands.

Either way, you are fully responsible for the scratches.

That's what makes me so mad, I never did either of things you mentioned. It's a tablet PC. I always close it screen-down before transportating, when I open it I use it as a normal laptop first, then as a tablet when needed. When I use it as a tablet, the only thing that ever touches the screen is the tip of the stylus and the side of my hand. I never let anyone touch it with their fingers and I definitely never sit anything on it. I don't know what circumstances caused them.

At least half of my friends have no idea where their scratches came from either. I think it's just really really easy to do.

OH, a touch screen. Well, could be normal wear and tear there, but you are in Limbo 'til you read the contract.

$20 says they never even notice the scratches if you don't point them out.
