whoa :Q just found out that they mainly use Unix for everything at my university (civilengineer), including work, programming, servers, etc......guess I'm gonna have to learn that super-geek crap 😛

fx. they have this big work-room with a lot of Sun workstations, running Solaris....anyone got some tips or something for this?

thanks from a geek-to-be

Solaris is like any other UNIX OS + CDE (common desktop environment, which was a rather lame attempt to unify the look and feel of the UNIX based machines)...either way, you can pick up any UNIX fundamentsls book and be just fine. When i went to school (graduated last year) I had a Linux box in my dorm-room and did all my work in my room (we had a quite a few remote login SUN servers just for that purpose). Anyhow, if You don't feel like installing Linux on your personal box, get a Windows based X-server like Exceed or Reflection-X and do the same. Also if You are really clueless about UNIX, I'm sure Your school has some orientation classes, so You might wanna go and check those out (at least pick up the hardcopy)...have fun

We used mostly Solaris in our college too for our UNIX workstations, with some HP-UXs in the mix. Basically there really isn't that much to learn to get around...

well, we've been using them for a while now.....DAMN does netscape for Unix suck...totally smashes any design, it's slow and cranky....gah 🙁
