Uh oh, did my 7900 GTX just die?

This morning I was surfing the net. I haven't played any games for about three days, so it's not as if the card was under alot of stress. I went outside for about thirty minutes. When I came back, the monitor wouldn't come out of standby. Like it wasn't getting a signal. So, I restarted by holding power button on the tower. Now the monitor was recieving a signal, but it wasn't a good one. First, there were multicolored squares all over the place. Then, there were columns of horizontal lines approximately 1/2" wide.

I tried re-seating the card and reinstalling drivers. No difference. I replaced the card with my old 6800. Everything seems fine now. So, is my 7900 GTX toast?

The card in question is a eVGA 7900 GTX. It is just the standard version, and I have not done any OCing at all. This card has worked flawlessly for nearly four months. It has played many demanding games like Oblivion, FEAR, and COD2. Nothing has ever given it a problem. So, why would it die now when I was only surfing the net?

Here are my other specs. P4 3.6 w/HT, 2GB DDR2 pc4200, 460w psu w/36a on 12v. Like I said before, this card has performed flawlessy for nearly four months. So, I don't think my specs are the problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Weird, your card shouldnt up and die like that if you havent been overclocking. Test it in someone elses system and if it doesn't work, sounds like your card is dead.

Just RMA it if its dead, since you haven't done anything warranty voiding, you should be fine.

Yeah, I don't overclock at all. I figure this card is already almost overkill for my processor, anyway. I'll call eVGA tomorrow.

I had my 2 year old 6800gt OC (just the factory OC never did any myself) up and die on me out of nowhere a few weeks ago so it diffenently happens : ( I'm in the process of RMAing it now; I've got a knew computer so I wasn't worried about getting it out right away.

I hear EVGA is really good with their customer support so hopefully you won't have any problems getting a replacement.

Well, I emailed eVGA customer support. I got a quick response(4:47 am). That's only five hours after I emailed them. Site says it takes up to two days, so that was pretty fast. Anyway, they said to RMA.

Yes, unfortunately it is dead. :( Sounds like another standard 7900 failure.

Hopefully the replacement will be one of the newer batch.

I have a question about the squares and lines I'm seeing. Is that considered artifacting? Just curious.

This frightens me a great deal.
I have an eVGA 7900GTX.
It has been having more and more glitches every week since I got it, regardless of the drivers I use.
Exactly how many cards have been burning up?
Must admit this is sort of news to me.

This has happened quite a bit with the earlier batches of the 7900 series. You should really RMA your card and see if you get one of the newer batch cards if the glitches are getting worse.
