Edit: it is the retail 1.6a HSF...

when i got it, i opened up the package and took out the heatsink...there was a black piece of stuff on the bottom of it, and i figured it was just a little protection thing they put on there to keep the bottom of the heatsink unscratched because it is right where the cpu will be sitting. i felt the material before i pulled it off, and it felt like metal, so i thought "there is no way this can be thermal material"

i have arctic silver II, can i just put that on the chip and set the heatsink on it? or will it not work now that i pulled the black stuff off?

thanks

Somebody else can probably help you better but I will jump in first ;) The black stuff I do believe is the thermal interface material. And I see no reason why the AS II should not work just fine.

The black stuff is called a thermal pad. It is basically parafin wax that melts when the temperature gets hot enough. This is to increase the heat transfer, but contrary to believe, they are horrible at transfering heat, and are just like not having any thermal compound at all. My advice is to pull it off and put some ASx on it. Be sure to wipe it clean with 90-99% Isopropyl Alcohol. I am getting a 10 degree improvement with AS3.

The thermal strip that you peeled off actually works pretty well, though I still used AS3 myself. You need to get all the gunk from the thermal strip off before you put the AS on. I used OOPS! and it took it right off, then go over it again with some alcohol. Then you'll be all set for the AS treatment.
