Uh Houston I have a problem - Lost all partitions on HDD - How do I install Mac OS X?

Uh well actually I deleted the partitions on purpose, for some testing for Windows OSes.

Long story short, my Macbook Pro came with OS X Lion. Correct, I currently have no Mac OS on the drive, not even the Recovery partition.

Here is the world's toughest question.😱 The reason why I say this is because, Apple website ONLY talks about "Update" for Mac OSes to Lion. That tells me it's just an upgrade, not a full copy. The file size is 3.53GB, but I can't tell if it's the FULL BLOWN COPY or not. My toughest question is, HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING ONE so I can install it fresh on my drive? Like I said, on the website they only talk about upgrade upgrade upgrade upgrade.🙄 Stupid arse upgrade. I AIN'T INTERESTED IN UPGRADE. I WANT THE FULL BLOWN VERSION WHERE DO I GO GET IT GOD DANG IT.

Please tell me if this http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-lion/id444303913?mt=12&ls=1 is the right one. But under *Requirements* it says OS X 10.6.6 or later, which tells me this is just an upgrade, not a full blown version.

plz help? D:

I don't use Apple machines everyday so please take this for what it is, but aren't the new macs that ship with Lion designed to do an OSX install (via download) that is initiated from the bios? Since they don't ship with install discs anymore, there must be a mechanism in place to install OSX onto a blank drive. Just something to look into.

Bingo. If it came with Lion then it's meant to be used with Lion Recovery. For the newest model Macs it's built right in; hold down CMD-R while booting and it will take care of the rest.

For older models you're in a bit more of a bind; you were supposed to create an external Lion Recovery Disk. AFAIK with these Macs, a recovery disk created with a similarly old Mac will work.

Thanks. I tried it and it initiated the Internet Recovery on the screen but gave me the error:

apple.com/support
-1006F

Yes I got the ethernet cable plugged. Tried again and again, same error.

Is it because I deleted all partitions (from Windows install setup) on the drive?? I don't think I have Lion Recovery partition. Don't know if this has anything to do with it or what..

Plz help.D:

If you were doing windows testing it might have put the drive into a partition table setup that it cannot handle.
Oh, it is CMD+Opt+R to get internet recovery, CMD+R just tries to boot the recovery partition.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM (CMD-ALT-P-R)?

Thanks for the kool solutions moderators. Much much appreciated. 🙂

But I am still getting the same -1006F error when the Internet Recovery starts (the first 10 seconds).

I think it maybe due to the restrictions on internet at work as it requires user authentication to get access to the web. I will try this when I get home. Me can't wait.

I will let ya know with results.

Yes, that is probably part of the problem

Did you try creating at least one partition with Disk Utility and see if it would get past that error?

The way I read it, it sounds like you have absolutely nothing on the hard drive (blank drive with no partition), so without a place to write to, the recovery system can't download Lion installation files.

Password authentication at work is definitely a problem, though...

This is part of why I always carry along an external drive that has either Snow Leopard or Lion... for those moments when I need to log in to the OS just to authenticate the machine.

^ That's correct, zero number of partitions on the drive, none, zip, meaning no recovery partition. 🙂

If I still get the error at home I will try your method. Thanks all. I'll let ya know with updates. 🙂

You guys were right. I went home and tried it. It worked.😀 Thanks so much, TheStu! Internet Recovery screen came up and doing its thang. The globe sign came up and what appeared to me was a world clock?😵 Who cares what time it is in other countries or continents.🙄 But turned out it was the timer😳, how much time left to download and create Lion Recovery partition... This is neat! It's so automated.

It then contacted the server and prompted me to download OS X Lion. Yes! That Lion OS setup screen looked very inviting. Me got happy. 🙂

But it wouldn't let me install the OS because there's no GUID partition. So it prompted me to go back to Disk Utility menu and create the appropriate partition for Mac OS to be installed. So I did. It says it will take about 10 hours to install Lion OS.😱 Must be my not-so-fast internet connection.

Woke up next morning to check my Macbook Pro. Lion install was complete and gave me welcome screen. Yay!

Thank you guys n girls.😀

Glad that I didn't have to pay for an OS download from App store or USB dongle. Wee!

If you're going to be messing with partitions regularly, I'd suggest still making a USB dongle. It will make the recover process faster and easier in the future.

Absolutely this^. Or, clone Lion before any of these operations so that you aren't coming back to a clean install every time.

Oh wow, I had no idea there was an internet recovery option. That's cool.

It is only on 2011 Macs that shipped with Lion. But yes, a super cool feature that I can't wait until MS rips it off. There are some kinds of blatant copying that I don't mind when it is a super-cool, useful thing. Such as the Mac App Store and the new Windows Store for Windows 8.

Apple can do it because they are a hardware development firm that happens to also use an in-house OS. I don't even want to think of the anti-MS outcry if they start pushing a proprietary bios that allowed the direct download of Windows without offering a similar option to other operating systems.
