Hey all,

Well, like the title says, my Alpha heatsink-fan (the big one for SECC2 CPU's) physically does not allow me to use my first DIMM slot on my Abit BE6-II mobo :(

Here's the thing tho...I have two 128MB sticks...and I was going to (and did) stick them in DIMM slot 2 and 3...but the problem is that when I do this, my system thinks I only have 128MB in my mobo, when 256 in physically in there. So I'm guessing that I *have* to have a RAM module in DIMM 1 on an Abit BE6-II..or am I wrong?

Here's where things get weirder..if I *did* have to have a RAM module in DIMM slot 1...then why would DIMM slot 2 work...but not 3???

If anyone could shed any light on this for me, that would be great.

Thanks,

PG

If you have any extra heatsinks laying around put that in and see if it works in the first dimm.

I have tested that and it works fine...but I spent $50 on this Alpha and it's helped me get my 800mhz to 1GHZ and I really donlt wanna give it up :(

You could try cutting the offending fins off of the heatsink. It wouldn't be pretty, but it would probably work. You would have a "custom" heatsink! Just think about it, a store like 3dcool.com would charge an extra $20 for the modification you did yourself for free. :D

You know, that has crossed y mind plenty of times...but the one question remains with me is this:

With what??

I actually don't mind doing it that much, becuase it's really not a whole lot that would need to be taken off, but I have no clue whatsoever what tool to use and such. And suggestions?

Measure carefully what needs to come off the heatsink, mark it with an indelible marker and use a hacksaw, dremel with a cutoff wheel or similar tool.

Also look at possibly moving the heatsink upwards a little to clear the slot.

the cut off wheel is a much better idea the fins on the heatsinks will bend to easily with a hacksaw believe you me did it then i got out my trusty 20000 rpm cutter and it looks like a machine shop cut it straight smooth after sanding edges back down i couldnt stand that beautiful thing gouged up its too pretty (pretty damn expensive)but its works i had to do this for the fan i put on my bx chipset ive got 4 slot for dimms so missing one was not a biggy or a problem :):)
