I actually work in IT support...for an IT department right now. Kind of odd.

Not really. Developers work in IT, but if you ask them to install their own RAM or video card, they're going to execute themselves. A desktop support tech should easily be able to install and upgrade hardware, but you wouldn't ask them to identify a problem with SQL code or fix a Cisco router.

With Windows Mobile and ActiveSync you can just prevent it in Exchange administation.

Even if they set it up correctly the mail will not push down.

Yeh but IT and other special cases are allowed to use whatever device we have.
so cant do it globally.

The best/funniest experience with IT Helpdesk was when I started at my current job. When I started, I reported to the Director of Network Operations which had the Help Desk under him as well. I was asking for media to install Visual Studio on my new laptop and was told that only IT can install software.

The best are the developers who think they're experts at all things computer related but in reality, have no clue outside of whatever programming language they use.

im a little late probaly, but as someone who works helpdesk..i hear this a few times a day. "Why should they have to do this" or "why should they have to do something when they've been doing it a different way the whole time"

or even better.it worked 5 minutes ago...

lovely stuff i tell you

You also have to realize that most IT departments are micromanaged to hell and gone, with many different layers of red tape and management. Help desk personnel are empowered enough to read a script in a 200 page binder.

take a quick look at the OP original date and see if they really care still. :awe:

There are 355 good days a year working in IT. Then there are the 10 days you just want to strangle someone. In some rare cases, a user will be more knowledgeable than a helpdesk person. But in this case it sounds more like the IT person may have been lazy or put the screws to you for being snotty.

LOL.
The ones at my job are pretty cool though. They stick to their projects and assignments and rarely give any static. But for the most that can be a tough crowd.

Also, the problem is not just related to non-IT. I know several people in our IT department who are in many cases bigger idiots then standard users.

For example, we have a 'software specialist' who uses terms like LAND, SAND, VLAND, etc when talking to network admins about issues. That same person loves to ask if the 'vmware is down' when anyone calls in with a problem connecting to anything (We run a large about of servers virtualized).
Had to laugh at that one!

The 2 help desk calls I got on my last job were simple, restart your computer, lets see if issue resolves itself, it did. I got fired that day. 🙁

At my last job, we had a developer who liked to portray himself as a computer genius who had "seen it all" and "knew it all from experience." His classic remark was "I've been using PCs since I was 8." We were having problems with our enterprise backups once, and he actually said "Backups are easy -- I used to do them for my dad when I was 10." Of course, the difference between swapping a tape in a drive and dealing with an enterprise library backing up dozens of servers using various backup agents over the network was something that escaped him. He also didn't realize that swapping a tape wasn't the only part of doing backups, it seems.

ANYWAY, there came a point where he had to have an Office install done on his PC. Generally, we let devs install their own software. This guy actually said "I don't know how to install Office!" and had to have the help desk do it for him. 😀

IMHO when one is surrounded by idiots the company they work for employed, it's not saying too much for their own worth.

Define idiots. Where I work we have quite a few "idiots" with regards to computers. Those same people can manage 200million dollar projects (non-IT) in ways that awe me. There are real "idiots" and then there are people that are just outside their bailiwick. It can be hard for "the IT guy" to decipher if his skill is not say project management or finance or whatever.

I remember this thread.

FWIW we just rolled out IE8 here like 2 weeks ago

this summer (July i think). we are doing the massive hardware roll-out where almost everyone is getting a new comp and we are going from XP -> Win 7 and office 2k3 to 2k10.

its gonna be one of the largest clusterfucks ive ever seen

pretty sure im one of like 5 people who has already started fixing VB macros because MS removed the "with application.filesearch" method from 2k7 and 2k10

The guy was referring to other IT guys.

🙄

At every company I've worked for, there have been idiots, average workers, and superstars. If you were referring to me, think what you want but I never have problems getting new jobs and being an A player no matter where I go.

I would not stay on a staff with incompetence, clearly they would not know who to reward or not.

Well the developer I mentioned was hardly incompetent; he was actually a good developer. His problem was that he talked about things he had no business talking about and made himself look like a fool as a result. It would be like me reading a medical article and acting as if I were an expert on medicine.

I won't speak about my current company because generally, I think most of the people are very competent. Management is another story, but I don't want to get into that here because 1) They may find it 🙂 and 2) I was a manager once and I know that oftentimes, "your" decisions are dictated to you from above so I don't know how much is their fault.

What you are explaining though is my point. If your whole company is run by idiots WTF do you think you will get out of the deal unless you just want to scrape by.

As a Manager it's your job to push back. If you are great at it they will bow down (unless they are idiots), if you are ok only then they will always push back.
