My father's previous lawyer's wife just called and wants a new computer for her "memoirs and stuff" she is doing. Her husband had ordered a machine for her and she wanted to know if it is good enough (she can cancel it).

P4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition

1GB Kingston HyperX
160GB hard drive
all sorts of other stuff including a 19" flat-panel

I mean, this is to write her MEMOIRS and junk. She is a womens liberationist too so it was funny hearing her and her husband argue on the phone--he wanted a desktop for future expandibility, she wanted laptop because her girlfriends (from the country club) had "cute little ones".

Each one would try and get me to side with them on the phone. All I said was to buy a Dell, get a good warranty, realize laptops generally cost more and have less future upgradability, that said you won't need to upgrade a top end laptop for typing memoirs while sipping sherry at the cottage.

If I sound bitter I am because they can afford to buy top hardware like that to type BS-too-much-time-on-hands stuff like memoirs

Tell them to get an iBook. Then she will have the cutest laptop at the CC.

Make sure she includes a 9800XT video card too. It has a memoir enhanced instruction set to help her write more efficiently. :)

You think that sucks... a year ago my friend's dad got him a G35... they go to dealer and no bargaining at all... ...they took everything the salesman threw at them... so they get jacked up with a $600 monthly for six years... :Q on a car that shouldve cost $35k... ended up costing $42k or something like that.

How about they give me the new computer, and I give them a $1,000 laptop that will do whatever they need and then some?

This is the same person whom I recovered her memoirs for before because she DIDN'T BACK IT UP and a power surge fscked her windows installation (so I mirrored the disk and grabbed its contents then reinstalled).

She wouldn't have it without me. I don't have set rates. I try to avoid the tech support like plague but did it as a last favour because her husband was good to us in the past. What does she do after I spent around 16 hours helping her (for a myriad of other crap including training her to use her new digital camera)? She hands me a $50 bill (CANADIAN money remember!)... and not just gives it to me...she kind of pulls it out, like its some huge event and pulls it tight so i hear it crack like "oh yay I'm getting fifty whole dollars wally"

I know plenty of "comfortable" people who tip huge, pay well and that... and then the majority of really rich people I know are cheap as hell heh.

Good warranty? WTF? Dell overcharges so badly on warranties.... come on, I mean, that's where they make their money! I always reccomend cheapest warranty to everyone. Oh yeah, years ago we bought a pre built computer since it was cheaper for the price and we just flat out told the guy we want the cheapest manufacturer warranty and none from them, hehe, he was surprised and then tried to tell us crap that has happened before, oh yeah, he even tried telling us the company runs the 7200 rpm drives at 8000rpm and lots of them go bad after 3 years and they don't cover it. Basically, he was saying we should spend $300 on a warranty for $500 computer in fear of a $60 or less part going bad, turned out to be a 20GB 5400 rpm drive.

If you have a problem with doing 'charity' work, then say something or don't do it at all.
You should define how much your hourly charge is before working 16 hours for someone. Otherwise its a gamble on what you'll get paid...

Everyone knows that rich people are notoriously cheap.

That is to get them off my back. You can buy three year warranties. I don't recommend buying from hole in the wall stores that you don't expect to be around tomorrow (tons of them here)... so I tell everyone just buy a Dell. That gets them off my back which is the ultimate goal. I don't -want- to be your 4am tech support unless you pay me well heh. And most people here are cheap as sh!t so it wouldn't happen.

Why is a women's liberationist who wants a laptop because it's cute, and wants her husband to buy it, writing memoirs? What is she gonna write about? Her struggles matching her blouses to her skirts so as not to be ridiculed by the country club fashion police?

Tell her to stop being a moron. But she's right, a laptop would be alot better for her. Why would she get a desktop just to write some damn memoirs?

Hey let's lump all computer companies together and say they're evil because of one bad experience relating to warranties! Yeah!

Tell her you'll provide her free tech support. Bring all your old parts, put it into her computer, jack her new parts, and voila!

Your computer = Her computer
