Ugh, stupid mistake. BE CAREFUL WHEN BACKING UP YOUR DATA.

So, I was backing up my home directory last night, preparing to reinstal lthe OS. I made a tar file on a seperate drive with my entire home directory. Formatted this morning, reinstalled, extracted the .tar file, and saw it get about 80% through and then reach an unexpected EOF.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BACKUPS ACTUALLY HAVE ALL YOUR DATA.

I didn't lose too much, but did lose my entirely collection of digital photos. :(

Umm, yeah... I did that once. Zipped about 1Gb of photos, so they would fit on 1 CD. When I needed to unzip them, winzip just informed "the file was damaged or not a valid winzip package" or something to that effect... When you backup, make sure your backup actually works.

Once I tried to copy a HD to another similar size HD, and got the destination and source HD's mixed... :(

My photos are the things I value most on my hard drive. I back them up to CDs and my home server in addition to keeping them all locally.

Why in the name of god would you zip them? It's not like they're expensive CDs.
