Ugh should I get Vista or XP for a new build?

I'm building a new computer and would prefer to have XP Pro. However XP Pro is going to run me $90 whereas I can get Vista for $70.

And I figure I will have to upgrade to Vista at some point, so should I just save some money or do it now? Or it Vista just too screwed up?

Another thought is that since I would need the Vista 32bit version == eventually I would have to upgrade to the 64bit version, no?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

You wouldn't need to upgrade to 64 bit unless you plan on going beyond 4GB of memory, really.

Why not get Vista now? It's working well for the majority of people. Do you have specific reasons to not want to use it? You might end up wanting to upgrade from XP anyway, so why delay the inevitable?

If you have hardware you think might be problematic with Vista, let us know. There might be some compelling reasons to not want Vista.

Well, what kind of stuff has problems?

What I have:

GIGABYTE GA-P35 Motherboard (brand new so I assume good)
BENQ 1620 CDRW Drive
10 In USB Card Reader
Canon MP780 printer
EVGA 7600GT

I guess that is all. I figured I should have ordered 4GB of RAM if I had intended to use Vista though, no?

Anyways, do you see any problems? Does most software work on Vista?

I've been running a 32bit XP/64bit Vista dual boot for the past 2 months. Vista is pretty rock solid right now aside from the few software bugs here and there. 2GB of ram seems to be the sweet spot. 4GB is a little overkill unless your doing some RAM intensive app's. I'd probably just say go to vista even tho I prefer XP currently.

Yup, and if you're a hardcore gamer and/or want to run Aero at its potential try to buy-up on your video card. 4gig is still pretty much of an effectation right now. Only one current game that I know of actually uses anywhere near that much RAM, and that's SupCom. Consider 4gig and a fast video card a leverage on the near future.

i ran Vista from November to July. i got absolutely sick of it, and the lack of driver support from nvidia and creative, the UAC nagging, the random system process crashes, etc. i went back to XP, which all my hardware was designed for, and i had forgotten how great it was!
