I have to take the SAT may 3rd (weekend after next). I just got a fat book today to study. I wanted to know if there is any harm in taking the SAT more then once, like if i dont do so well this time, can i just take it again in June? Or do colleges see that, and it looks bad?

I took it a couple weeks ago for the first time and just got my scores in. Got 1360, debating if I should take it again to try to raise it, im pretty content with my score.

I dont think colleges like when you try more than 3 times or something of that nature, I forget the exact deal on it.

i think the sat company sends all of your scores to the college, but the college only looks at the highest when considering for admission, but it will still make you look bad if they see u take it more than 3 times even though they only look at the highest score.

Actually you select which scores you want to send. In fact if you get a really bad score you don't even need to send it at all...

As for myself I have 3 SAT II on May 3...US History, Math IC, and Biology E/M... :D

But this counselor told me that you dont want to take it more then 3 times, so whats that about. I think if you take it that much, you may not be able to choose to only send one of the scores.

found this googling:

How many times can I take the SAT?

As many times as you'd like. Most colleges only consider your highest math and verbal scores. However, it's not recommended to take the exams more than three times since your score probably won't change drastically.
------

hmm... maybe some colleges frown upon taking the sat many times. i hope i can take multiple times, cause i dont feel prepared for may 3rd.

If you don't feel prepeared go take it and at the end of the test have them not calculate your score. There is that option for them not even to run it through the machine. You wont get a score, but you will get a feel for what it is like. however, I recommend you get it scored to see what you get and what you need to work on.

I would hope she got a bloody 1600 after taking it 8 times. Freaking perfectionists. Burn them at the stake.

I was under the impression that if you take it more than three times they average your score. I remember reading that at the collegeboard web site a year or two ago. I took it once - wahoo!

Really though, if you have to take it 3 times you were fvcking lazy between your 1st and 2nd attempts. I can understand taking it twice, but if you couldn't fix your mistakes between the 1st and 2nd try odds are you aren't going to improve any more. I say this because either you've reached the bounds of your aptitude (or whatever that thing tests...I think it tests how well people can memorize the format and style) or you were too lazy and didn't bother reading a review book and taking practice tests (which is the best preparation for the SATs). Just my opinion though, I could be wrong...

Why would anyone ever review for the SAT/ACT?

it completely depends on the college. some take your best score, some average, some take your best 2 sections and add those. also, you don't *have* to send your scores. just leave the box blank when you take it, then after the test you can send it off for $2 or however much it costs. i took the SAT twice just for sh|ts & giggles and both were sent. the one the college accepted me with was the highest. i go to UT now.

Don't worry too much about the first time. No harm in taking it again. SATs suck. I got a 1500 and look how stupid I am.

Im a Peer College Counselor...aka TA to the College Counselor. we are instructed to advise students to not take more than 3, because colleges will tend to average them after that. this is also repeated by UCLA reps.

however, like someone said earlier, it depends on the college. some will score them as a whole, others will mix/match your V and M scores from different testings. might also consider that if you improve gradually or even dramatically...it shows that you're "learning" and "maturing" overtime, whether that's true or not...;)

my tip for the SAT is to just familiarize yourself with the testing formats and be smart about it. those books should help you with how the tests are structured. be sure to know when to skip and when to guess--strategy, strategy, strategy. in my opinion, the SAT is more of a stamina test than anything. the longer you can remain openminded and analytical, the better you'll do. the second you lose energy, concentration, motivation, etc, you will begin to misread things. that said...rest your butt!

<shrug>

To make sure they don't have to take it more than once to get a score they're happy with? Also, I know some people that are really smart but didn't familiarize themselves enough with the test before taking it and ended up with scores that they were unhappy about.

Personally, I got a 1480 on my first shot. I did read the Princeton Review book for the SATs - my parents made me do it so I did it the summer before my junior year and didn't take the SATs till May of that year so I doubt it was too helpful at that point. However, for the week leading up to the test I did a bunch of practice tests so I knew the types of questions to expect.

well, if you ask me, It really depends on what you want to do with your score. If you are trying to compete for a scholarship, then other people who took the test in less trys and got the same score as you might beat you to it. That's why you should try your best the first time.

But if you just want to get the score to go to college, then I don't think it matters(then again, it really depends on what school). But I've never seen an College rejection letter saying "we cannot accept you because you took your standarized test too many times..."
