Ugh, playing Hl2 over again, and while it is very pretty at 1024/4xAA/8xAF on my 6600GT (600/1150)...

given the whole AEG thing there's a good chance this will make it back to nvidia and they might fix it ;) You're the one coming across as the whiner ;)

Dug, I know also the issue. I had a thread back in October discussing X1800 x 7800.

Recently, I tried an X1900 against a 7900GTX and instead of having shimering issues at WoW, the issue was Guild Wars.

In normal circunstances, I would have picked the ATI.......normally the Nvidia solution is worse on IQ and shimmering, but on Guild Wars - Ascalon City Gates - looks awful on ATI - tons of shimmering. Transparency AA helped Nvidia here a lot.

I picked the card which had the "less" disturbing shimmering effect on me. The bonus was the quieter solution.

I tried also HL2 on my comparison, shimmering was the same on both.

BTW, I saw last weekend at ToysRUS an Xbox 360 on demo and it has shimmering also!! Pay attention next time you see a race car game on it.

Did you mess around with the driver settings when you played Guild Wars? With everything at max I don't see any shimmering (never tried it with Quality settings so I don't know if it shimmered or not at that setting) at all. I get textures off in the distance popping in and out every once in awhile, but I figured that's pretty normal for a game with big maps.

HL2 and CS:Source shimmered a lot when I had my 7800GTs. I tried HQ which helped a little, but didn't resolve the problem for me. None of my ATI cards ever shimmered in either of those games.

Yep, I did. I set AF to HQ, AL OFF. The shimmering I am refering didn't help in the countryside, it was on the city itself -when running towards a gate or diagonal to it. It was very distracting.

On the 7800/7900, this was fixed using the TRAA. Usig AAA didn't do it.

Perhaps this is something different than shimmering, but it did bother me enough.

On WoW, ATI does a better job at the textures on the ground at greater distances. ATI's HQ definitely is better than Nvidia"s in this game (and probably all others). The difference again was TRAA: that made trees and foliage look better on Nvidia's card.

There is a reason i dont post in the video forums much anymore. I have to deal with ignorant people like you -_-

I didnt say it was a "big issue". I said it was a "huge problem to some". Which is it. I didnt say it was to everyone, just to some. Dont like it? Doesnt matter, its true.

So you just restated what i said only using the words huge. When did i ever say it affected everyone. In fact that is just my case im trying to argue. THINK!!

I didnt create this thread. The issue is far worse on NV cards. Look at the hardOCP article for proof of this.

Well but in some games ATI is worse. Additionally, i know that ATI is far worse in BF2 with the shadows. Why aren't there threads complaining about that. That is something that EVERYONE has to be able to notice (Yes, i know it is there on Nvidia cards too)! I have not seen one thread that complains about the games that ATI does horribly in; its constantly this "shimmering" and you guys make it out that it is only Nvidia.

You're being hypocritical because you are whining, about other people whining, while telling them to stop whining...

That is the most twisted view of any argument i have ever seen. Just stop posting....

I didnt say, you claimed NV had better IQ. Nice try with the insults though. I do look at it with a neutral standpoint, ATi has better IQ. And certain NV fans dont like it.

Oh you didn't:
Its time to face the facts, ATi has better IQ. Get over it.

Well by that you certainly imply that i believe that. You certainly dont look at this issue with a neutral standpoint. Ackmed, i have never once seen you argue on Nvidia's side...

I do enjoy the games. And I dont have to go looking for things (dont assume so much) its very easy to see for me. Im not "claiming" them as problems, they are problems to some people.

NO! You HAVE to look for these problems. When running around enjoying the game it is impossible to see these "problems" (Which are merely low texture resolution, and transparent textures. I cannot tell about the poll in the picture, i would have to see it in real time).

Do you play HL2, for instance, and as you run by, you slam it into revers and then go and stair at a pole or something. Give me a break!

btw Rollo is banned (yet posts under a new nick) hes not going to be a mod, looks pretty silly with that sig Kinda funny you tell me to be neutral... yet wanted him as a mod, heh.

I was not aware that ANY AEG member was banned. Additionally, he is much less biased than you. Rollo time and again recommended ATI in his posts. He bought the cards, he ran benchmarks. If you guys wouldn't be so quick to jump on his back, not reading the post, and just ass-u-me something, maybe you would have seen that too.

given the whole AEG thing there's a good chance this will make it back to nvidia and they might fix it You're the one coming across as the whiner

How am i whining?! I made a statement, and backed it up.

Dug, i know you are smarter than this. Think about it...after what 6, 9 months of this complaining, DONT YOU THINK that Nvidia has heard JUST A LITTLE bit about it. Why in Gods name would you post ANOTHER thread about it? Especially if what Ackmed said is true; that the AEG members have been banned.

That's aliasing, not shimmering.

is that also aliasing? those poles aren't transparent textures are they, and they look like flickery crap when you move in the carriage...

Thats a low resolution.

Im tempted to install HL2 and run it at 1600x1200 just to show you that resolution is 90% of your issue.

That pole has a very reflective specular map on it and since the pole is rather small, the reflection changes are very noticeable as you walk around it

it looks like a ****** crazy light show at 1024 ;)

Is it really that res dependant?

Dug, nothing you have posted is shimmering, and every single person in this entire thread has been misusing the term transparent textures. There are no such thing, they are called alpha textures, which are applied after anti-aliasing

Those lines on the bar in your most recent screenshot i see on all 5 of my computers

To Sc4freak:

Only the X1K series has hardware acceleration for it, thus any card before that line will have a terrible time running AAA(despite it being capable). AAA doesn't work in OpenGL games either. As for AAA being of better quality, and TAA cause thicker lines, IMO the thickness looks better. It isn't thick, persay, but the fencing stands out while on ATI cards it fades into invisibility.

yeah, this doesn't sound like shimmering at all, at least in the sense that people generally talk about. It will go away if you increase the resolution and use TRAA/AAA (or SSAA if the card(s) can handle that).

Kevin, you don't have to look for shimmering in Guild Wars. It stands out like pink on black. I managed to get rid of almost all of it by following Gstanfor's suggestion to use the 79.11 drivers, which solved the problem. Now I don't notice it at all. I can't remember, but I think he also recently recommended the 83.64 drivers (correct me if I'm wrong), so for those of you having shimmering issues, try that driver set and enable HQ, plus a LOD clamp if need be, but that may take care of it for you. Worth a shot anyway.
