At nvidia.com, just noticed June 1st released 158.24's for Vista 32-Bit and 64-Bit.

Is it me or they released 158.45's just ... yesterday ? Which was focused on performance increases for CoH under DX10 ?

As much as I like my brand new GTS the best I can say about nVidia and their Beta's and such is that it's ... erm, it's confusing.

So, anyone tried those ?

The one thing I really hate about nVidia since buying an 8800 is the crazy driver-naming. With ATI, you get a good new driver every month. With nVidia, you get a bunch of beta drivers, and occasionally an official driver, and you never really know which is newer. A few weeks ago people were running FW 165.01 (I believe), then 158.42 came out, then 158.43, then 160.03, now 158.45, and who knows which is newer -158.24 or 158.45? There's so much confusion and who really knows what driver you should use. 158.45 seems good and provides a good boost in CoH DX10, so I'll stick with that.

Fixed.

Seriously though, anyone tried those ? I mean, the 158.24's ? I'm about to install Vista (only a couple of hours to go before all my back-ups are done. It's a nice coincidence. I was about to do just that yesterday (install Vista) but I had time restraints at the last moment, so I'll do it in a few hours instead. Now, I need to know which to install first ... 158.45's that seems to be good specifically for CoH in DX10, or the 158.24's that seem to be erm ... seem to be newer, or not, I don't know :(

There's nothing about the 158.24's on NVNews.net at the moment, and I'm even registered there. I know that it is indeed a good web-site, but their forums is a little slower than here.

EDIT: Never mind, I have found a thread about those drivers at NVNews.net, I forgot to look at the sub-forum for Vista drivers. And for those as curious as I was about those drivers (158.24's) do NOT download them, they are a month-old set of drivers that only received WHQL Certification and nothing more. In other words, the drivers that were released yesterday, the 158.45's, are newer and certainly better, according to make threads I've read about them, especially doing a fine job in CoH under DX10.

That's lame. I just installed Vista with the early May drivers (the latest as of like...yesterday, which was when I installed Vista).

Now I have to update the day after!

Appending a 'b' to all BETA driver names would make things a lot easier.

For example, you hear about two drivers - 158.24 (June 1 2007) and 158.45b (May 31, 2007) - you immediately know one is an official driver and the other is a BETA.

at win hex nvidia got criticized by so many hardware manfacture and Microsoft for not still having a decent stable drivers at vista launch and still not fixing sli issue under vista.

Stop using leaked drivers and the problem resolves itself ;)

Unless you have specific gripes with the current drivers, going beta does nothing but cause headaches and maybe eek out small increases.

When it comes to DX10 performance, yes, I have a problem with the current official drivers.

Which game?

Company of Heroes, Lost Planet (although with Lost Planet I wouldn't be surprised if that's more the developers fault than nVidia's)

I expect that with a high-end video card like the GTS, I should be able to play a game like CoH at maximum settings with a 1680x1050 resolution. How much more performance nVidia can get out of the drivers I don't know, but at least the 158.45's provided a 30%~ performance boost. Still though, the game's unplayable, and that's without AA and with a good overclock (612/2000)

I would wait for a DX10 engine and not tac ons from companies that dont have fantastic engines to begin with to pass that judgement.

I was not aware of the CoH issue though, lost planet is almost certainly a problem with the game and not the drivers, no card seems to run correctly in DX10.

Also:

- Vertical refresh synchronization is enabled by default to improve visual quality by preventing tearing of the display image, use ?-novsync? to disable.

This would substantially damage your framerates if the card couldnt sync with the displays refresh rate, the next step down is half refresh.

Bravo nvidia... just installed the 158.45's after having dismal performance in CoH after the DX10 patch a couple days ago. I must say, the 158.45's... on the SAME settings as the 158.24's are MUCH MUCH better. Not only did performance go up by 20% on the low end and about 40% on the high end, but the actual imagery is much better. I didn't realize it a couple days ago, but textures were "missing" and fog was screwed up beyond belief. With the 158.45's, the texture detail is incredible, and the performance went up quite a bit.

A driver for my LG 1710B is already installed I think because it shows up by name instead of "default monitor". I googled it and saw that other people have the same issue with the 158.xx driver.

I'm running Vista 32 bit. Are you running 32-bit as well? FYI, 1280x1024 was there when all I had installed was the default Vista display driver. After installing the 158 driver I couldn't go above 1024x768. Still think it's the monitor driver?

I don't even pay attention to release dates or version numbers with nVidia drivers. Whenever a new driver comes I try it and only keep it if it works better than what I have now.

That's exactly what I do. Honestly, it's not reasonable to sit there and download the newest drivers one after the other right when they come out anyway. I'm actually still using the drivers that came with my 7600GS. LOL. I'd rather spend my time playing the games than searching for the absolute newest driver.

I can't even remember what version I'm using anymore, but I really hope these fix the very annoying bug in World of Warcraft. When you open two WoWs at once, there's a very very distinct flicker that will occur on the 2nd monitor. If I close the second WoW and just leave the first open, the flicker will still occur until I close the other WoW. It's quite annoying .
