UGH--major problems with Soyo desktop PCI wireless card

So I first bought a Soyo AWPC3101, which is th4e desktop PCI version of their notebook wireless G card, which works great in my mom's old Dell laptop. It's advertyised as straight G.

But getting it to work in my desktop is another story. I just coudn't get it to work...what it seems to be doing is turning itself on and off every second or so.

This is on a home built computer running XP Home sp2 with an Abit KR7a Raid Mobo and a Plaomino 1700 OCed to a 1900+ that runs rock stable. In the Device manager it's listed as IEEE 802.11 wireless adapter. From what I can tell it uses a Prism chip, I googled it and some dude said his Linux box recognized it as a prism GT/Prism Duetto.

When I use a Linksys Wireless-G PCI adapter WMP54G, I see like three networks to the Soyos' 12 or so, and the signal strength is way weaker.

It doesn't make sense, unless the Soyo is somehow seeing a bunch of "a" networks that we dont' know about, or something is wrong with the linksys.

This is driving me nuts right now, and I am trying to make up my mind to see if I shoudl return the Linksys (with the Soyo it is way too late now) and try a third one.

The way I am guessing that it turns on and off is through either NetStumbler or the wireless configuring tool that come with the adapter, it's like you see the networks one cycyle, and the signal goes away the next, and then back.

You can't connect to any of the signals ever.

Thanks for your help.

PS (Edit): I have tried the Soyo Card in two other machines, one running Win 98 and the other running Win2k, with similar or worse results.

P.P. S. I am sure I have the most up=to-date driver....Soyo's website lists very little info on this little dealie.

I cant find any wireless PCI cards at Soyo's website. The pictures and description of a AWPC3101 seem to indicate that it Fits Any Standard 32-bit CardBus Slot- thats not for a desktop.

If you really do have a desktop PCI card - try their Tech support.

I know. Unfortunately their tech support doesn't answer my inquiries so I figure I'm on my own, thus this topic.

You guys know any good ways to contact them other than the regular link syou find on their support website?

Might try locking the PCI bus at 33 MHz, if that setting is included in the motherboard bios setup.
WinXP has much better support for WiFi, so upgrading the O.S. would be another option.

The box is already running XP bro, but I will try locking the bus.

Again, I have tried in two non-OCed machines with the same results, but it's worth a try.

I think I will try this evening on a Win2k box my cousin gave me, a 733 PIII the he upgraded to win2k. The reason why is that WIndows update detected the built-in video and the Ethernet NIC and gave me the option to install the drivers, which worked (well teh nic already worked, but the video was really crappy (only 16 colors available) until I installed this driver.

Maybe Windows update will have something for this card, though it is obscure. however it uses a prism chipset, which is apparently pretty common.
