Ugh, I just had a terrible thought about DVD box sets.

Soon there will be HD-DVD and BlueRay "special edition" releases. :disgust:

Edit: To be honest, I started this thought by thinking about how cool a Star Wars HD-DVD set would be.. and as much as I'm tired of rereleasing new special editions every year, an HD-DVD version would be pretty sweet.

An HD-DVD release of the original Star Wars is probably a long way off. They destroyed the original negatives when they rereleased the movies in 1997.

It is all speculation but LucasFilms has said that the original trilogy films are not actually what Lucas envisioned for the trilogy. So I am assuming he considers the remasters to be "his vision" and destroyed the originals after the remasters were done.

What's different between the original and the remasters? Are the scenes actually different? I always thought "remaster" meant they deliver the same thing just in better audio and video quality.

and here is a great way to do it! MAKE GOOD MOVIES. no re-makes, no Re-mastgers. put out a orginal movie.

hell i don't mind paying $10 a ticket and $20 to buy a movie if it is good. but they have been releasing crap the last few years. sure there is a ocasional good flick but most has sucked.

its the only way the movie industry can make money these days...by repackaging material thats already been done to death. so releasing a "Box set" of a classic that has 5 minutes of extra footage of the main actor scratching his ass. Then release a "directors cut" of the box set that includes another 5 minutes of the director scratching his ass. The best of all is the "anniversary edition" box set of the remake of the classic. So you make 1 movie, then add in 15 minutes of extra footage and bam you've sold it 5 times over to the same poor shlub cause he thinks hes getting something special.

The films that were originally released do not exist in their original form on DVD. I believe they only exist on VHS and Laserdisc.

The films were remastered/rereleased in the late 90's with "new" scenes added. These films were released on DVD.

The fans cried foul and demanded the "original" films be released on DVD. LucasFilms claimed this was impossible because the "original" transfers were destroyed when they remastered/rereleased the films in the late 90's. They finally agreed to release the "original" version on DVD and did so a couple of weeks ago however the quality suffered because they were just transfers from the Laserdisc version.

Long story short, Lucas doesn't want the original version released again.

Yeah, I had a thread about this earlier. I owned nearly 100 dvds or more and I sold all of them due to the new format gaining reality. I didn't want to get stuck with $.50 dvds like vhs.

Sorry, I was replying to the OP.

I know the whole SW story and tend to side with GL. They're his films and he can do what ever he wants with them. There aren't too many people in the film industry that actually own their own films. He does and can be creative with them all he wants!
