Ugh...I am having a heck of a time deciding whether to get rid of my dinosaur.

I am part of the High Def era, but I also have a Panasonic Tau CRT TV that is simply an awesome set for Standard Def content and things like last gen consoles and such.

I cant seem to make a decision about letting it go or keeping it. On the plus side, it is still under extended full coverage protection till 2009 and as I said picture quality is awesome in an SD sense. On the minus, its huge, heavy, and takes up a lot of space.

Sway my decision one way or the other.

I was hoping this was a well done parody of the cat allergy thread. Keep the TV until it dies unless you're REALLY itching for HD content. If so, keep it in the bedroom or something.

If you have room for it and would use it, why not keep it?

If not, if you have a close friend or relative who can use it, give it to them and just visit it now and then :)

I hear ya man... I have a Sony WEGA CRT that I'd love to upgrade. I'm not sure which is stopping me more... Having to pay over $1,000 for the TV to replace it, or having to move this massive 200 pounder somewhere else :)

Well, I am in a similar boat. We have a 36" Sony WEGA that delivers an outstanding SD picture, but the falling prices on HDTV's have been really testing my temptation. One of the things that keeps me from switching at this time is the thought of having to move that 300lb behemoth. I'd probably keep that Panasonic for another year or so unless you can find a buyer that will offer you a fair price PLUS do all the moving.

I have a sony Wega that does 480i 480P and 1080i, I also have a couple LCDs that do all the HD signals. HANDS DOWN every time I watch a 480i or 480P signal I will always use my big Wega tube TV, LCD's and Plasmas don't even come close to being able to translate the old standard signal as the old Tube TV even though it's 36" and 320 lbs.

What I am saying is why not keep it and get a new one for the high def stuff?

The comment made by So pretty much ends the thread. Do you really need 2 HD sets?

I say keep it if you have the space. Last generation console content will (and does) look crappier on HD.

Keeping it until it dies does make sense on some levels, especially if it died while under the extended protection plan. However I have had two offers already at more than half of what I paid for it and the protection plan in Nov 2005.

..if you get rid of the crt you won't be exposing yourself to particle emmisions from a cathode ray gun anymore.

Once you get the HD, you pretty much stop watching SD tv anymore.

At least I did.

Don't replace it until the image begins to shrink on its own, sound fades in and out, and brightness changes whenever it wants to.

Go to a friends house who has HDTV, spend a few hours watching HD content. Then go home, pack up your TV and get an HDTV and never look back.

Why would I do that? I already have an LCD TV in the house as well with HD content incoming. Sorry, I thought the first sentence in my OP sort of described that already.

Sell it and either save the money, put it towards a replacement HDTV set, or buy a blue-ray or HD-DVD player for your existing set.
