UGH!!! Here we go again. "Microsoft vows to improve Games for Windows Live"

Microsoft has vowed to improve Games for Windows Live after acknowledging that the service has kicked off to a "rocky start." According to Kevin Unangst, the senior producer of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, the service launched with the right intent, which was to bring achievements, friends, multiplayer gaming and matchmaking to the PC. Unfortunately, the company made a few missteps along the way.

Why is this a bad thing?

Because just about everything microsoft gets its hands into (besides operating systems and office software) usually goes to crap.

Unless microsoft can create something like steam - social networking, friends list, online store - they should stay out of the gaming market.

Microsoft makes more promises then a politician, keeps even less of their promises then a politician, and the few times they actually keep their promises you usually live to regret it. As a minority PC gamers are on the bottom of the list of their "constituencies" to keep happy. Except for Direct X, Windows 7, and the X box you can pretty much ignore anything they have to say. When and if they ever do something else right so many people will be shocked that you'll know a miracle must have occurred.

Yes I think they need to improve it by putting it out of its misery and acknowledge that they are incapable of doing something better than some former employees of theirs.

Lots of vowing little improvement. I never have issues with steam; yet GWFL is like total crap. Can't they just dump it and admit they can't design or code shit.

Well they have admitted that GFWL is a load of guff and that they are going to improve it.

Nah, its like their browsers. It comes with the os and a lot of people are ignorant enough to think its the hottest thing since sliced bread. It also keeps their foot in the door just in case they actually ever have to compete with someone.

The MS hate in this thread is hilarious. They are vowing to improve upon something they acknowledge they did a poor job on. How is this at all bad? If Valve came out and said "Oh we messed up on the the whole episodic half life content, we're going to try and improve it" would you guys being as jaded?

Microsoft's whole aim with GFWL was to make PC gaming more like Xbox gaming (they actually tried to have gold accounts so you pay for PC multiplayer... lol), and the collective response from the community was a big "Hell no." There is no improvement for them to make, the whole idea is just bad.

Microsoft didnt have a clue in the first place and it had a detrimental effect on many games bundled with this needless clunky bullshit, their attempt to improve this isnt likely to go any better.

The only improvement they could make would be to can the whole GFWL project and announce a partnership with steam.

To preface my comment, I actually don't mind MS. They do a great job in the areas I work with as part of job (.net, Biztalk, etc). I do agree with some others here that they have failed with the GFWL initiative in the past. They did a great job with the Xbox, and to be honest, most everyone else in the console market is really chasing their innovation here.

That said, I just don't see a single portal for 'Windows' gaming unless it was something like steam. MS has put a recent focus on cloud computing, and it would be pretty cool if a number of devs got together with MS to build something like Steam that was not intrusive (copy protection crap), reliable, and useable. It actually could be a great idea for PC gaming because it could be a place to purchase and install older/ported games, casual games, and more hard-core titles.

Edit: I use both GFWL and Steam without any major issues...

The only way to improve it is by getting rid of it altogether.

This. They should make more PC games, release them on Steam. The only thing they've done well for PC Gamers is DirectX. Everything else has been inadequate(Games) or just plain crap(GFWL).

I've still never forgiven MS for disbanding their Sidewinder division. The Force Feedback 2 was one of the only affordable and precise sticks out there... But hey, the division isn't making money, so fuck it!

Meanwhile, GFWL isn't making any money and is horrible, but they keep it going.

No faith in MS.

you may have heard of this thing called an xbox. i hear it's pretty popular with all the kids these days.

in itself, it is good, But then it is also the same aproach that marketing people use to keep interest in their products while they might or might not do any changes to fix it.

I'll beleive it when they set a "to be done by" date and I can see just how "hard" they tried to improve it. If nothing has changed (as is normally expected with PR spin), then I will bag them out extra loud.

If Valve came out and said "Oh we messed up on the the whole episodic half life content, we're going to try and improve it" would you guys being as jaded?

If it took them 12+ months of fan/customer feedback to admit that and if they wanted to charge us again (new RRP) for the "fixed" version, then yes.
